I'm not going to get it, as frankly the entire Source idea is stupid. All valve needed was an AI/Physics update, not a graphics update.
Although goldeneye is fun, Tetris: Worlds is more fun(so far I've gotten to level 11 before my mistakes compounded into my death.)
I played the demo for Half-Life 2, and it's awesome. I think that I'll buy it. I can't wait to find out the story because it sounded really good in the demo. The graphics are incredibly pretty too.
Would it help me understand Half-Life 2 if I knew what happened in Half-Life 1?

Well, HL1 still costs a few bob so I would save myself some money and have a chat with someone who played halflife those many years ago when it was great...
And besides, the first while of HL2 basically sets it up nicely anyway... so no in depth info on the first game is essential
