Hard drive reboot question

So I got a new xbox and as I expected, the hard drive is acting up on it. There is a way to "reboot" it if you will. It envolves going into your memory, pressing your Y button, and then enter a series of buttons to fix it. The problem is, I can't remember that series of buttons. I've had to do this twice, so I know this will work.

I've tried emailing xbox, they're idiots over there and didn't tell me a thing.

Reformatting the hard drive
Go to Settings -> System Info
Press Y, Left Stick Up, Left Stick Down, X, A

I've heard of one where you clear your system memory and then the other option which is to reformat the HDD itself.

Can someone clarify what the first one is? I'm not following it at all.
