Heres what i do:
Model 18: start your crosshairs on the neck or chest area. let loose on the trigger, and get a feel in mid combat as to where your bullets are going.then, ajust accordingly
M14: The good old M14...where to start. First realize your using only a 20 round clip of 7.62mmx51mm bullets. Needless to say, you don't have much ammo, even with double ammo. You have to constantly scavenge for other M14 users, M60E3 users(rare nowadays) or M40A1 users (5 in the entire world...i might become the 6th ;)-). There are two ways i fire it: im used to using an M21 out at the range, so i like keeping my M14 in single shot, even in CQB (Close Quarters Battles). I have a fast trigger finger, so its easy for me, but others might have a problem. If you have it in auto, you can learn how to burst it. i have learned this art from a good friend of mine on socom. We've been owning for two years now, and its fun as hell. the method is firing untill your crosshairs just start to jump, then let off for an instant, then repeat. you can still fire it full autoish, but the recoil wont kick in at all. Or you can do what AL does....ride the wave. Learn to predict your path with your bullets, and you will come out on top
