Web host?

So my hostmonster account has finally ended, and while I was very very happy with them for the most part, on a few occasions we exceeded our CPU quota, which resulted in hours of downtime. Also, while their updates weren't exactly slow, they weren't exactly speedy either.

So We're looking for a new host. We don't want some ****** 1&1 style hosting with the barest of hosting features. We would like something that's pretty reliable. We'd like SSH, or at least SFTP. Price is pretty objective, but we're not willing to pay over 15 bucks monthly and even that's pushing our limits.

I used to have phpBB it was good for what I had. A lot of great features and good controls but What kind of site did you have?

Why is my spell check saying control(s) is spelt wrong?

You just displayed all sorts of noob in this post...

I've mostly used 1&1 for all my hosting needs and they've never really given me problems... if you don't like the "bare minimum" can't you just increase the package?

Otherwise, I suggest you find someone that has a dedicated server or get one yourself... Libertine knows plenty about that.

We've looked into dedicated hosting (and VPS as well), but considering how our sites are non profit and basically just personal, we can't afford that. I would love to have a vps because you get root access and all that goodness, but 20 bucks a month is a bit much imo.

I would get the 1&1 plan, but the thing is I've already seen better deals than their upgraded plans. However, I haven't totally counted it out either.

Basically we're just looking for a very non-restrictive shared hosting plan. We're both technologically adept, but my friend is basically to the point where he knows at least a bit of every web language there is (we're talking fluent in jquery (and by extension javascript), php, and flash, he's basically a guru in css and markup languages (xml, html, xhtml), and he also knows a bit of ssh and .htaccess).

Features we're looking for:
  • at least 100 gigs of web space (it's more than we could conceivably need)
  • at least 500 gigs of monthly transfer
  • OC-48 connection or higher (might settle for less if load is drastically less than most hosts)
  • ssh access, along maybe with SFTP (would be great if we didn't have to fax some photo id)
  • no restrictions on the files we upload (as in file type/size. obviously we're not concerned whether or not we can upload porn or torrents or whatever)
  • multiple domains a must, also need to be able to transfer domains
  • php ver 5
  • mysql db
  • WOULD BE AWESOME IF THEY HAD phpMyAdmin and cPanel

Try Web Hosting, Reseller Hosting, and Dedicated Website Hosting w/ cPanel - HostGator

Their cheapest plan gives you 300 GB but only one domain space is allowed. The most expensive plan gives you 1,000 GB of space and unlimited domains, FTPs, etc. You can do monthly for about $30 pay up front, pay $20 for the domain per year, and $15 for the monthly fee. I love that host.

Oh yeah, forgot to say that I just reregistered with hostmonster. I found a coupon that took two bucks off the registration price, which in addition to another hostmonster promo made the purchase mad cheap.

Still waiting to get my money back from imhosted
