DirecTV vs. Cable So, I took the plunge today and ordered DirecTV service. I get it installed next Monday. Who has? Do you like it?
I was most inspired to make the switch after my HD DVR from my cable company (Bright House) broke and I had to stand in a line worse than your local DMV to get it switched out. Furthermore, it was significantly cheaper.
I got the NFL Sunday Ticket™ for 4 months and NASCAR Hotpass and a free HD DVR and then I'm gonna buy another HD DVR off of eBay to avoid paying a lease fee from DirecTV.
The only thing though is that I had the TV/Phone/Internet combo with the cable company so now I'll have to diversify (gonna get Vonage for the fax/home line, I think), but it still turns out cheaper.
The only other thing I'm thinking I might possibly regret is if FiOS ever makes its way here, I'd want that instead. But ah well. I'm living in the now! -

We have DirecTV and the Dvr, it's pretty nice. Sometimes you get some annoy blackouts but that's only for some baseball games. The one thing that I really hate though is that whenever it rains the satellite goes out. So it is advised to have one small TV that can get local channels like I do. -

Hmm... well, I used to have DirecTV when I lived out in the boonies (because that was the only option for TV out there), and I remember rain causing freezes, but I thought it was better now. It could be a potential problem though since we get so much rain here in Florida.
In the past few hours since my previous post, I cancelled my initial service setup and will re-do it tomorrow because I'm going to do my friend a favor and take over his contract since he's moving and he otherwise has to pay a $300 cancellation fee. The best part about it is I'll use that money to buy the extra HD DVR. -

Verizon has packages with internet, Directv, and phone. I have one. The only downside is that I find it a little confusing when I want to look at upgrading services. I love my cable.. When we had this other thing the internet was so slow, and we hardly had good tv.
But we got optimum online (cable vision) and I couldn't be happier. I have to go there soon and get a new cable box cause mine broke.. I shorted it out lol. But when I go there, there are no lines and if there is they usually go pretty quick.
The Dmv on the other hand I rather chew off my arm before going there.. -

The only thing I'm worrying about is the quality of the service when it rains... We've still got this Tropical Storm Fay though so I should be able to put it to the test fairly quickly. I get it installed tomorrow.
Bye bye Cable TV. Hello NFL Sunday Ticket. -

DirecTV with the Sports package is the way to go. But if I recall DirecTV wacks you on additional boxes and dishes. I would like to have DirecTV again because during NFL season I run 3 TV's in my living room at all times. I still run regualr expanded cable. But yes Swiss, Brighthouse has terrible service all around.

I wouldn't recommend getting vonage. That's all I have to say on the matter. If you really want to get it, I'd thoroughly research the service and make sure it's what you want. The 911 isn't the same as normal 911 is, and it's not as reliable as a regular phone in regards to connectivity. A regular land-line is much more secure and simply better in my opinion. If you want to just try VoIP, get skype. It's free to other PC's, and 2.1 cents a minute to the continental US. You can also text and Video chat with it. -
