Problems go unnoticed if you don't have anything there to detect it. Windows firewall isn't really trustworthy so don't bank on that to help prevent crap happening.
For what its worth, I would install AVG just to be the safe side. It's a relatively small program, its free, and it will help prevent anything if it does decide to occur. I haven't had any viruses since installing AVG, and it finds/deletes around 25-30 tracking cookies per day.

Everyone without a virus scanner has problems too. The thing about those of us with virus protection is that we know about them, which is of course better.
It's akin to fixing a beeping (ie I have a problem, please fix me beeping) PC by unplugging the speaker - the problem is still there, you just don't know about it anymore.

The reason I don't like virus protection is because it picks up any little problem it sees. Then it pops up saying fix this immediately. Then when it does it's scan it usually slows up other programs witch defeats the purpose of getting the program IMO. That's why I have a back up HDD put all my files on it then pray I don't get any serious virus.
Also I have in the past noticed small infractions, once I notice something is different I do system restore to about a month ago and the problem is fixed.
I guess it all depends on what site you go on and how you use your computer.

I don't know what sucky programs you've used or how sucky your PC is but I'm running AVG free on an EEE PC, which runs on a Celeron 900Mhz, and it's fine. It runs in the background, picks up any little thing (why is that a bad thing?) and runs a full scan every so often, and I don't even notice until it's finished and pops up so say it's done. If it bothers you that much just turn off all the alerting/auto scanning and run a scan when you're not using your PC.
It's not rocket science, but please do not believe you are above getting viruses. Nobody is - I'm tech-savvy and I get them from time to time seemingly out of nowhere. Yes, by and large if you're not on dodgy sites every day you can reduce the risk, but you can still get caught. I'll stop harping on about it now because I've said my piece, but you really should think about getting something running.

Yeah, Sub, but how do you know for sure you don't?
Without any valid and/or decent virus protection on your computer, how do you know you don't have any? They "pick" up the viruses on your computer.
And on another note, viruses don't always hurt the performance on your computer. Actually, a lot of them don't. They run in the background taking note of every little mouse click you make, and every website you visit.
Downloading free virus scanners isn't always the best bet either, but something is better than nothing.

Why use a program when my computer is fine? Don't say my computer is sucky because there's a 90% chance it's better then yours. And thank you for the lesson in science, you know I thought 8 years of owning my own computers and never getting a virus was lesson enough.
You know I buy and sell things online all the time, at least once a week, and I never encountered a problem by getting hacked. Another thing if you own a vista OS then you would know that when you visit a trusted site the bar turns green and those are the only sites I use. Since I started using the internet for buying things I would have to say about 90% of my new things are bought online. So I guess I am extremely lucky..... Or I can resist those web sites that you others can't.

I may be wrong but I believe you're referring to trusted site certificates. That only means that the retailer's certificate can be verified.
Viruses, spyware, malware, have all evolved considerably. A lot of it is so sophisticated that you can get it from a website, mp3s, streaming videos (wma and flash files are great for this) and you wouldn't even notice it was there.
If you're not running any sort of virus protection you may want to consider doing so. In the even that you end up with a particularly nasty bug that does a fine job of corrupting all your image or audio files (and there're plenty that do this), the damage would be irreversable.
I'd suggest Norton. It's responsive, well-priced, and isn't a resource hog.
And thank you for deleting that post, it wasn't very nice.

I've always had problems with Norton, so I won't suggest that. But, I will suggest AVG. It is seriously THE best vp I've ever used.
Annnmd I'd like to call you simple minded for thinking you've never had a virus. Believe me, you have, you just don't know

No need to get defensive, I'm just offering advice. I'd suggest that given that I've already told you that my PC was an EEE PC running a Celeron 900Mhz, you should know 100% whether or not it's better than mine. I would also suggest that it absolutely is better than mine. The point I was trying to make was, if my piece of crap Celeron 900 can handle a background virus scan, your PC should. But apparently you took it as a challenge or something. For the record, I don't care how amazing your PC is, and I don't care how long you've been using, owning, or building computers for - I've been doing it longer. But I didn't try to ram that down people's throats like you've done, because it's condescending, childish, and it would just make me look like a bit of a twat, really.
If you choose to leave your system unprotected, that's up to you, but don't get all teenagery about it and tell people how amazing you are when people are just trying to offer you advice.
Finally, how do you know you've never had a virus if you never scan for them?

Lol! I guess that came off worse then I thought. But I know what you are saying. I still have my back up HDD but if you guys have a program that you can swear to and 100% say you don't even know it's running then let me know. My mom had Norton before I had my own computer and every time it came on or popped up the computer turned into hell. And the same with my ex girlfriend. That green bar I could have sworn meant safeguard or hacker free.
And also I thought I wrote but maybe I didn't, I never got a serious virus, if I did then I must be really dumb cause I never noticed a thing. I usually once a month defrag my computer and delete all internet files.
