As a big F-U to the early-adopters and line campers, and to compete with the new iPod Touch, iPhone price cuts and the elimination of the 4GB model!
8GB / $399
It should be noted that all of the new iPods with screens have a new UI. While browsing through the menus, the menu only takes up the left half of the screen, while the right shows album art, images, and video clips of the media you're browsing through. Not sure if there'll be an update to add this to 5G iPods (I hope there will).
Also, iTunes is getting a
big fat upgrade for the iPhones. Now you can create your own ringtones from the iTunes catalog, and put them on your iPhone for $.99.
All models should be in stores by this weekend.
Personally I'm a little disappointed. My 80GB 5G iPod is nearly packed to the gills, and that's all music. I really wanted the iPod Touch, but they opted to go with flash memory to keep it slim. It'd be great if they'd meshed the Touch and Classics together.
