I have to agree Ruran, AIM's user interface is only friendly to the people who go online for around 5 minutes to say hello, but anything further than that can be difficult. (Eg, still don't know how to save my contacts to a CSV file after using the service for well over a year)
AIM seems to be AOL's failed way of creating a commercial IM service.
In that respect, there isn't much difference between the free Windows Live Messenger we know and love, and the commercial version that can cost tens of thousands of dollars/pounds.
I have used the commercial version of WL Messenger while integrated in MOSS 2007 and I can tell you the basic interface is exactly the same, but a few more icons are displayed beside each contact name. You then have the argument that the interface of the commercial version resembles that of a free service, or the free service's interface is really professional. Personally, I would say where AIM fails, WLM greatly excels.
