Tbh it's not all it's cracked up to be in my opinion. There's like a thousand programs to replace windows applications, but most of them aren't as good as the windows version. The desktop and other effects are friggin awesome too look at though. Also, there's this thing called wine that essentially acts as a virtual machine or emulator for your windows applications, so you can have things like notepad++ work on it. Personally, I would never have it as my only operating system (even if I wasn't a gamer), but I'm fine with dual booting it. Also, it isn't as stable as I thought it was going to be, it actually crashed a few times (not a complete system crash, but it did lock up a few times). Yeah, it crashes about as much as XP for me.
And if you do get it, never ever do what they tell you to in the readmes of a downloaded program. do an apt-get instead of a ./configure. That's where I effed up on my first install of ubuntu.
Anyway, that's just my 2 cents on ubuntu.
