Rep Power: 0 | What I would love to see on Xbox I would love to see the Total War series being brought on to the xbox.
I was a huge fan of the game while it was on the PC. Now I know controls in RTS games on Xbox have been unsuccessful. But I think the consoles a now powerfull enough to make a successfull port to the 360
Thoughts? |

Thoughts? | I could swear i posted in this thread before but whatever.
Anyway, controls in RTS games have been unsucessful in the past but in recent years its now proven you can make a good strategy game for a console, as long as you throw conventional RTS schemes out the window, and maintain the RTS feel, but more suitable for a controller. Games like the Command and conquer series, Tom clancys End war, Halo wars, and Civilization :Revolution demostrate this, so expect to see more coming in the next years/generations.
Maybe Total war could come to the consoles at one point, but I think they need a publisher bigger than Sega for that to actually be feasable. NOt that having them as a publisher is a bad thing, but i just dont see it happening wtih SEga, as the franchise on its own is not making enough money to spend the time and money to make a console vers. ______________________ |

Rep Power: 1 | If Sega were to port a Total War game to a console, it would end up being like Civilization: Revolution. That is, stripped down (or streamlined, for those of you who prefer euthanisms). It would do nothing but take resources away from the PC entries of the Total War series, and give resources to a game that would inevitably be inferior. |

There are more ways to try RTS on a console than the way Firaxis did. I think Command and conquer, and universe at war, proves that you can have a fun RTS without having to strip a game down to inferiority. Even so, Civ Revolutions system was pretty damn good on its own. Different from normal PC civs yes, infereior, no. ______________________

Different from normal PC civs yes, infereior, no. | I would say that the Total War series has more in common with 4X and other turn-based games like Civilization than it does Command & Conquer and RTS's. Most of the action plays out on the Civilization-esq world map. This, by nature, makes it somewhat inaccessible to many gamers because most of what you do is micromanagement. It seems only logical that in order to overcome this, they will do what Firaxis did and try to remove as much micromanagement as possible. Unfortunately, the game itself suffer because of this (Civ: Revolution wasn't awful, but it is certainly inferior to Civ IV, which happened as a result of Firaxis trying to make the game more accesible).
Beyond hypotheticals though, Total War itself just doesn't transfer well to consoles. Real-time battles are determined almost entirely by how you deploy and position your troops. This can be done very easily on the PC by pressing the right mouse button and dragging it across the screen. There is no way in hell you could do this with an analog stick without it being incredibly frustrating (because you have to individually position each unit). Sure, you could program a button to recreate frequently used formations, but this would be a poor substitute. I honestly don't see how the real-time aspect of the game could transfer to consoles without it being tedious and frustrating. |

Honestly all these new RTS control schemes i could never have imagined possible but devs have found a way to make some kick *** games on console. I still dont think revolution was inferior just because it was different. ______________________ |
