you have to remember 12 was made by the vagrant story team, so thats why the characters traits and models look alittle different for the norm FF. honestly the gameplay overshadows the story/characters in that game. I didnt like how disconnected from the whole world you were, but let me not ramble.

It did lack the feeling you were apart of a larger world. I agree. It felt very confined as you mentioned. Kind of reminded me of Valkrye Profile, in the fact of how confined you are. I don't like the Vagrant Story System.

Final Fantasy 12 is my favorite FF HANDS DOWN. I'll copy/pasta my reasoning from another forum I posted this at:

Pretty much every other FF up until now had ONE big city/kindgom, then a whole lot of NOTHING throughout the entire rest of the planet. 12 features two EMPIRES at war, several kingdoms in between, as well as smaller villages with no affiliation either way. Not to mention, this is all taking place on just ONE Continent. Needless to say, it felt like stuff was actually going down.

Unlike most recent FFs, there also wasn't a "OH THE BAD GUY IS ACTUALLY SEPHIROTH" halfway through the game. The Empire IS the nemesis through the whole game, although its motivations become more clear.

Also, there is SO much going on during the game, it really feels like a world that's alive. Between Hunts, random side quests, and just small stuff like running into someone again from earlier in the game, greatness.

Also, it's the first RPG in a while that gave me over 70 hours of gameplay. It was WORTH the money. And hell, I haven't even tackled Hell Wyrm, Zodiark, Omega 13, or Yaizamat yet (that last one has 50 million HP). There's a lot to do in this game, it would probably take over a 100 hours to do it all.

In which I also love how non-linear it is. FFX was literally a straight walk to the north end of the map. 12 is not that. Expansive, side quests, hunt monsters.

The characters are fantastic. I loved ALL the characters except Vaan, who I thought was boring and generic. I actually got a feeling with Penello. Whereas Ashe was a Queen of this kingdom and was hurt when it was taken away, Penello is pretty much in the same situation...but was only a citizen. I found it interesting when each one talked about the Empire, as their views were very different, even though they had the same motivations.

That might have been un-intentional though. IN the guide all the characters have a cool sub-title that describes them, like Basch's is "Loyal knight branded as a traitor." Penello's is JUST "Vaan's friend."

Which reminds me, thank you for the lack of a love story FF12. Vaan and Penello were already a couple. Baltheir and Fran were already a couple. None of this teeny love story ********. Just established relationships that we get to see parts of throughout the game, especially Fran and Balthier. Any moment of those two together was so damn real.

The only downside of the game was the whole Loot thing. And the License Board. And I wish Espers would be useful. Otherwise, yeah, totally immersed me.

What are you talking about? In FF7 (my second favorite), there was Midgar which could be the big city/kingdom i agree, but there wasn't just nothing around. There was a whole world of different cities. The only thing uniting most of them was their hate for SOLDIER and SHINRA, and alot of the cities just didn't care. Yes, the towns and cities were spread out but, that was do to natural topography.

I do agree with you about the whole other things happening while the story was going on. The earlier engine's didn't support that because the software technology wasn't available in 1995.

And your comment about the amount of gameplay falls on the software not available again. But didn't it take everyone else about 50 hours atleast to get through FF7 if you didn't run-through everything?

The FFXII characters weren't horrible but i was turned off by the fact that, besides they're clothing choices they didn't look alot different. The cast of FF7 on the other hand were very unique looking from one another. Contrasts like Yuffie and Barret , for example. And how can you slam on the love story in FF7? Cloud was in love with Aeris till Sephiroth did the whole kill her by dropping on her thing. The killing of her brought on Cloud's anger and eventual mental breakdown and realization. Without they're Little...what did you call it? "teeny love story" it wouldn't have been such a great story. It's like if Jack already was sleeping with Rose in Titanic. The climatic ending would have been....the ship sinks.

THAT's the problem. There were like, what, TWO cities per continent? That's a WHOLE LOT OF NOTHING.

First off, when did I say that I was comparing this game to just FF7? Cool up fanboy.

Secondly, when did I say I was comparing it to PS1 RPGs when EVERY RPG EVER was over 50+ hours?

I said FF12 was the first RPG in a while, meaning PS2 RPGs. Xeno 3 came closest before FF12 with only 40 hours.

FF7 is not the only RPG ever released. It's not even the only Final Fantasy ever released.

Also, every male party member (plus Zack and Sephiroth) in FF7 looks exactly the same except for Barett and Cid.

Jenova killed her. Not Sephiroth.

FF7 is not the only RPG ever made.

Plus I didn't care about the scene because of two girls throwing their vaginas at Cloud the whole game up to that point, it was striking because SHE WAS DEAD AND DID NOT COME BACK. It had nothing to do with the love story aspect, it had to do with the "one of your friends is dead and will never come back" aspect.

My apologies comrade, i know that FF7 was not the only RPG or only FF for that matter, it just served as my foothold for analyzing your post. oh and hey maybe i haven't played FF7 recently but i swear Sephiroth killed Aeris, not Jenova.

For the majority of the game, Sephiroth was chilling up in the Northern Crater doing nothing until Cloud handed over the Black Materia in the Crater.

Every time you run into Sephiroth up until the final battle, it's actually Jenova impersonating Sephiroth. She basically busted herself out and chose that form.

The only time you face the real Sephiroth (except for flashbacks) is the final battle.

It's not Jenova. It's Sephiroth projecting himself psychically. At least that makes more sense than Jenova acting as two beings, Square-Enix making Jenova act as two beings, and Sephiroth referring to Jenova as "mother."
