I was playing GH2 before and I was
"getting into" a song and I was really hitting that whammy bar. No more than any sensible person would but it is easy to get obsorbed into the game. I wasnt being an idiot and slamming it from 2 meters away, just moving it back and forward really fast, which is what the guitars should be made to withstand; though it seems not according to the pictures.

1: The whammy bar on the inside
2: The SG controller all pulled apart
3: The piece that activates the spring
The whammy bar is activated by a spring. When you hit the whammy bar, a small piece of plastic hit the spring, extends it and that is what activates a sensor in the guitar, which sends a signal to show the whammy-ing on the screen and giving you more star-power. Mine broke, so now I cant use the Whammy Bar, which I am pretty pissed about but its still under the 60 day warrenty by two days - thankfully. I processed it today (1.11.07) and the warrenty runs out in two days (13.11.07) so it shouldnt cost me anything.
Note to all other "enthusiastic" players, be careful with your whammy bar, as it is very poorly manufactored. And dont even think about saying "it was human error", it was poorly made; what do you expect from crap made in China.
