In FFXI, you can have up to six members in your party. So, along with five other players, you can attack monsters that are really tough to beat when you are alone. This is my view of the components of a good party.
Numbers in () indicate how much of each should be in your party.
(1) Puller- He is the guy who moves around the vicinity the most. He goes around, hits the monster once or twice, and runs back towards the rest of the party. Doing this will bring the monster to the rest of the party. It is preferable that he has a ranged weapon (i.e. a crossbow), but it is not necessary. However, the puller is the one who strikes first. He is usually a warrior, monk, or thief.
(1) Tank- You need a guy on your team to be a tank. A tank is a guy with high defense and alot of HP. He is the guy who uses Provoke on the monster. Using Provoke draws the mosnter's attention towards the tank. You don't want the monster attacking your white mages (healers) or your black mages (wizards). The tank takes as much damage as possible, making sure the others don't get hurt too much or die. A tank is usually a warrior, monk, or thief.
(1)Nuker- He is the guy who sends offensive spells at the monster. He stands farther away from the main battle, and just uses spell after spell on the monster. He is very valuable to any party. He is usually a black mage or a red mage.
(2)Healers- These are the people who cure all the party members. They cast Cure spells constantly. Those monsters do quite a lot of damage, so healers are vital. They are necessary in a party. That is why there are two; in case one of the healers die. These healers are usually white mages or red mages.
(1)Optional- Anyone can fill the sixth spot. Some parties have sub-tanks; tanks would take over when the main tank is critically damaged. Some parties have another nuker. Some have another healer. Some have a guy who's role is just to attack the guy. Many options for the sixth spot. This spot is usually filled by a warrior, monk, black mage, white mage, red mage, or thief.
Note: For descriptions of the warriors, monks, etc, consult the FFXI guide that comes along with the HDD.
He probably can't wait for FFXII.....I don't like the other Final Fantasys...basically I don't like RPGs. But FFXI is a MMORPG, which changes everything. So much freedom, so many options.
I haven't played FFXI since August, but this is what I remember as a great party setup.
Puller: Ranger, Thief, Ninja Tank: Paladin, Warrior, Ninja (Blink Tank) Healer: White Mage, Red Mage Damage Dealer: Dark Knight, Samurai, Dragoon, Monk Nuker: Black Mage, Red Mage Support: Bard, Third Mage, Second Damage Dealer
My Ideal Party (50+) -
Ranger (Puller, Massive damage long range)
Paladin (Tank, Support healer)
Red Mage (Healer, Buffer, Debuffer)
Dark Knight (Massive melee damage, Minor cast damage, Debuffer)
Black Mage (Massive cast damage, Debuffer)
Bard (Massive Buffer, Massive Debuffer, Support healer)
I have successfully overcome enemies a party of 6 could handle with 3 people. These people must know the game very well. This includes weapon skills, traits, abilities, and their enemy strengths/weaknesses. This is hard to do but not impossible.
Red Mage (Healer, Buffer, Debuffer)
Paladin (Tank, Support Healer)
Dark Knight (Nuker, Damage Dealer, Debuffer)
A few of you who know the game might be wondering where the white mage is? You thought he was so important back in the dunes didn't you? Post level 50 the white mage is simply irrelevant. A skilled RDM/WHM can handle more than a WHM could. In addition to that RDM have great enfeebling spells and ability. The RDM is the jack of all trades and most covetted of all healers end game.

You can go along with 15 other players...alliance(sp?).
My view of a good party is a good DD(DRK/RNG/BLM),primary healer(WHM), back up healer( could be another WHM/RDM), puller(basically any job with a ranged weapon works), tank(PLD/WAR), and a nuker(BLM).
Dude, old topic. And that party would get pwned. You need a tank no matter what, or the mob is gonna eat the mages for breakfast. and DRKs absolutley own.
