Yahoo's Most Hazardous Sports

Looking back at those two polls about "Toughest," and "Most Dangerous" sports, I thought I'd share what Yahoo had to say about those (and they've got numbers and facts to back it up).

Quote:
For sports lovers, summertime is play time. The season signals months of sun-filled bike rides in the park, rounds of golf with friends or even taking on colleagues in the corporate softball league.

Fun as all these sports may be, however, each comes with its own set of hazards.

“We get excited about extracurricular activities, summer and spring activities, and our competitive nature comes out,” says Dr. Marcus Roux, orthopedic surgeon on the medical staff at Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie. “We tend not to think about the danger or possible ramifications of sports.”

But given the statistics on sports-related injuries sending Americans to emergency rooms each year, experts say it’s a topic that deserves more attention.

Most Hazardous Sports - Yahoo! Sports

At the bottom, they put the top five, based on numbers and historical facts.

Quote:
1. Basketball
2. Bicycling
3. Football
4. ATVs, Mopeds, Minibikes
5. Baseball, Softball
I thought that was pretty interesting. Especially since a majority of us agreed that basketball and baseball/softball shouldn't even be included in those past two discussions.

I saw this earlier, and assumed hockey would be on it, but guess what? It isn't. Take that, Scuba!

Basketball surprised me though. I really didn't think it'd have stats like that.

But I think we were talking about professionals playing those sports. This article talks about consumers, which are just regular people playing the sport. I think there's a fine line between the intensive level of sports for the professional side and recreation side.

I don't believe so because regardless of who's playing the same risks still apply. From little leagues to the big leagues, it's still "tough" or "dangerous", so you can't really count out the non-pro's just because one level may not be as fast or as gritty as another.

Well it becomes more dangerous when the speed, competition, and intensity pick up. I don't think an injury in a middle-school level basketball game is as likely to happen as an injury in a professional one is.

Going by the sport itself, I'd agree with you. But including the components of the players, I'd disagree.

I pretty surprised that basketball is #1. All the Easton HS games I went too saw the occasional jammed finger and such. If I remember right, only 3 students in the entire Leigh Vally division (12 teams) had season ending injuries. Of course this is only my area and it's a huge country, it's just surprising to see it as #1.
