NASCAR General Discussion Thread

Anyway I thought I would start a topic on NASCAR, I watch the races on a regular basis. I love the two road course races (Infinion, Watkin's Glen). Some of my favorite drivers include Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, and a couple others. I hope Jeff Gordon wins the cup this year, just because I'm a fan of him.

Anyway, what's your favorite track and driver? Who do you think will win the race to the cup this year?

(Note to Mods: You didn't defin spectater sports in the forum title, So I think this thread is in it's rightful place)

I like Matt Kenseth and Jeff Burton. I think this year Jimmie Johnson will go away with the Cup. Gordon isn't consistant enough. Denny Hamlin is an amazing rookie and I'd be VERY suprised if he didn't want away with Rookie Of The Year honors. I watch the race every weekend to.

I like Dale Jarrett, but he's close to retirement and he will drive for Toyota next season. I also like Tony Stewart.
I live real close to the Daytona track which I have attended on the Pesi 400 Races. But, i go to the Atlanta track the most and I hope to hit up Homestead this November for the final race of the season. My dream track to go to is Bristol, Hands Down. Anybody that says Nascar is boring simply has never been to a race before.

Sorry, but I truly despise Nascar. It really does not have much to do with the driver, it is all car. Can a good driver win with a car worse than the competition? No. It's all about sponsorship and innovative ways to make your car go faster...

Then please have enough common sense to NOT come in here and tell us that. Yes, there is a physical aspect of it, if you say no, you are dead wrong. Can you, Dionysus, constantly drive a machine that takes a toll on your arms, legs, eyes, or hands, for 4 to sometimes 5 hours at a time and successfully complete your race in first place as well as not have any damamge to your car while moving at 185+ miles per hour? If you can, then by all means, become a NASCAR driver. But until then, do not crack on those whose tastes go around such an event, stick to your RPG games. and the statement "it is all car". Uh ok, not many people can come back from 4 laps down and get back on the lead lap, not many can spin out and STILL win a race, and not many people can take a crappy car to victory. I truly despise people who flame something that they do not understand or will never bother to understand.

Back on topic, my favorite driver is the most hated man in NASCAR. I go for the #24 of Jeff Gordon. I am strickley a Hendrick Motorsports fan. I absolutely hate Roush racing and especially Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle.

I totally hate small tracks, they are not exciting in my opinion, like Martinsville and Bristol. My favorite tracks are Talladega, Daytona, Infineon, and Watkins Glenn. Although the race at the Glenn wasnt too exciting this year.

That is exactly the opposite of what it's about. They NEVER talk about the sponsorship, it's ALWAYS about the driver. Yes there is a physical aspect, havn't you seen that Matt Kenseth commercial about how he teamed up with gatorade to create an in-car drinking system. He got dehydrated and hit the wall at 200mph.

I never said there was no physical aspect, if you would actually read. I know the brutal conditions inside the car, but it is the same for all drivers. They are all conditioned to drive like that, and every one of them does it well otherwise they wouldn't be there.

I never said I could... but that doesn't mean I can't comment about the sport in general. I mean come on, can you hit Randy Johnsons fastball for a homerun? No, but that doesn't mean you can't talk about baseball. If you would have actually read what I posted, I said I despise the sport, nothing about those people who like it. I told you that I didn't like it, and gave my reasons. I don't see anything wrong with that.

How does someone come from behind and have it not be in part to the car? What could possibly make one driver that much better than another that he could come from behind 4 laps to win. By that logic, if that driver started in pole position, he would never lose a race (if he didnt crash). I didn't flame the sport at all you are just being an idiot at this point. All I said was I don't like it. I think I'm entitled to my opinion. It's not like I came in here and said "Nascar sucks omg!".

What I said was that the car wins the race. Someone with a dominant car has 2x the chance to win over a slightly better driver with a worse car or pit crew or anything besides that. I didn't say a single word about the physical conditioning of the drivers. If you think the car has nothing to do with winning races, then maybe you should re-evaluate the sport.

So you're saying that there is a car out there with no driver winning a NASCAR event? It is not all the car that wins the race, driver skill definitly plays a huge facter in determining a winner of a race. What you aare saying is that someone like rookie Denny Hamlin is an equal driver to a veteren like Terry Labonte, or Richard Petty. It's impossible for them to be in the same league if they have the absolute same car and setup. Another example of driver abilities, how do you think someone like Jeff Gordon wins over 9 road course victories (Record btw) and then do something like sweep both short track Martinsville races in a single year. There is no way you can say the car did all the work. Also all the cars are setup before the races, like Daytona, you want as much downforce as you can get with the car so it can stay fast while on the track, while at somewhere else you want more wedge to help the car handle. The cars are a big part of the show, but the drivers play an equal part when it comes to getting their car in the winnerss circle.

Well the driver obviously takes part in winning the race, I'm not trying to take away from the drivers and say their job is easy or stupid, I'm just saying that the car is a huge factor in winning.

Now that I understand your point here I'll agree with you. Car is a big factor but it's the team that also helps that car get good.

Okay, here is a perfect example of driver-to-car skill ratio. All you need to do is look at Jamie McMurray. He was with a much more lower budget team up to a year ago. That team was Gnassi racing, but since the beginning of the year, has switched. His new team is Roush racing, who is one of the most dominant teams of NASCAR. Every sunday they equip him with a car that is par with his teammates, who are great drivers, including the ones I hate, Kenseth, Biffle, Edwards, and so on. Jamie McMurray's record and performance is as pitiful as it was with a crappier car. He has not shown himself a "Roush" worthy driver, just a waste of time and resources. If you give a good driver that SAME #26, I gaurantee you that he will finish %67 percent better than McMurray.

Nascar is always about the drama, not the motorsports. It seems like all the apeal is always about this team or this driver, bla bla bla.. not about the dynamics of the race or the cars. The sport just seems pointless from a racing point of view.

From a racing point of view, you should think about all of the strategy and driving dynamics that ARE involved in the sport.

I agree with Mob, they practice and practice to get their car the best they can get it. Whats not to do with dynamics? They talk about track temperatures and tire wear on certain track temps, how the car adapts to the track as the race goes on.
