Sav, you my boy! That's the first duo that popped into my head. I'm a Clemson fan and I've watched both ulcer inducing games this season. Whitehurst is a decent qb that could be alot better if he had seasoned (I'm not going to say better because all they really need is game experience) recievers but the whole reason we're sitting 2-0 this season is because of the running game.
Davis is going to be UN-BELIEVEABLE. Mark the date and keep this post in mind becuase I'm going to go out on a limb and say this...
Barring injury, James Davis will hold
every major Clemson rushing record before he leaves. I've been impressed enough with this young man to say that and believe that statement will hold up. Also, I don't believe one (referring to Merriweather/Davis) holds an attribute that the other doesn't. If you've watched the games you'll have noticed that Davis was just as comfortable busting runs between the tackles- he devestated A&M between the tackles- (power runs), as well as bouncing them outside- Most of his early yards against Maryland came from stretch/sweep runs-(speed). Also, Merriweather may have a belly on him (I say that with a hearty smile becuase someone built the way he is shouldn't be able to leave people like he does) but I direct your attention to his game winning touchdown this passed weeked against Maryland. Granted he got a nice block to spring him, but once he hit the open field down the sideline, he was gone. Pulling away from the defenders giving in chase. Also, as if those two weren't bad enough, the guy with the funky dreadlocks (I believe his name is Cole...can't remember atm) isn't half bad either.
Davis is our future don't get me wrong, and he will be an amazing running back. But with both of these backs in the backfield both having the speed and power they do, coupled with a new offensive coordinator that is dedicated to establishing the run game, I see big big things for us this season AND beyond.
Now if the defense will just tighten up and stop making the games so close lol...
Some other backs to keep an eye on, though they may not be part of a dynamic duo...
Adrian Peterson- This man's a horse. The run he had against Tulsa this weekend to seal the victory reminded of something you'd do on NCAA '06. Run over someone, leave someone, stiff arm someone then high step it into the endzone. This guy's fun to watch carry the football.
I can't remember their names but the QB/RB duo from Texas A & M are no joke. Both can break ankles and in that style of option offense, you'll see numbers galore from that team this season. I'm glad we overcame them in the first game but I was impressed with their running game.
Texas (Longhorns) QB/RB duo- It pisses me off I can't remember their names right now because I've been watching them this season. But see the above comment...the same applies.
I don't get to see many west coast/western area teams Anthrax, but I am familiar with the Gophers style of football. So I wouldn't doubt your statement that they have stellar backs. In any event, if the rest of the season holds form to the first two weeks, this is going to be a most memorable NCAA football season. :)
