silenced weapons, what're your tricks?
this is my first time starting a thread. i noticed sniper tips and tactics, and rushing, but i didnt find anything on silenced specialists. if i were to place myself in any of these catagories it'd be the last. i always have prefered silenced rifles to all others, so i'm going to throw some stuff out there, and i'd like other folks input, so maybe i can learn a few new things.
the great thing about silenced weapons, is if you blend in with your environment, no one knows where you are. i always use ghillie suits, and find the most suitable "bush" or "shrubbery" and sit. i'll pick hot spots from the previous round where i'll know i can get alot of action. i shoot at whoever goes by, and i hardly ever actually move from that position, unless i'm being threatened by a vehicle, or someone spots me.
from round to round, just like sniping i'll have 3 or more spots i can use, and depending on how far away i get kills, i'll sit in the same spot for 3, 4, 5 rounds until someone starts looking for me.
also, when i dont want to jeapordize my position, if someone is super close to me, i will wait till they run by, and storm them from behind. everyone knows that feeling, when all the sudden silenced bullets start whizzing by, and they're thinking where are they coming from? most people will move for cover, and not turn around. if they do turn around you have more time to shoot them in the open, or you can wide out, so they still can't see you for a few more seconds. then you can go back to the same spot, or pick a new one.
when a teammate is in a fire fight, i also move out of hiding, from the sides or the back, when there aren't too many, and help out. honestly, i like when there's lots of enemies outnumbering cuz i can pick enemies off and theyre not even focused on looking for you hiding out.
even though silencer no.2 is less muzzle flash, and it is confirmed via another thread, that they both shoot the same distance, it's obvious to me, that silencer no.2 doesnt have nearly enough strength, or kick behind the bullet. i always use silencer no.1, unless it's on a small small map, where that little splash of muzzle flash mike make the difference.
about picking locations, like i had mentioned before, with the bushes and what not, i also make sure, seeing as alot of these things i do, seem similar to sniping, that i'm mid-range. your rushers are always gonna be up close and personal, and your snipers are further away, but when you have a good team, you have all three of these people working well together in the same area. you move together, and work as a team. i am constantly watching over the rushers where snipers arent available, atleast a dozen times a night, i get to say, it's okay, i got ur back, and i get lots of "thanks" and "good team work" maps like citadel, where there's rooftops, are great places to overlook.
weapon selection, i almost always go with the m4a1 front grip and silencer 1. i found the scope as more of a distraction even thought it's extremely effective. the scope, with a silencer, you need to get a headshot if your going to kill them. if your good at that cool, but i'm not. the grip makes the m4a1 feel more like the m4a1 sd of socom 2. it's really familiar, i have lots of success. also, when the bad guys are off in the distance, if i can see'em jumpin around, or movin, why not, i'll take a few shots, fire off a burst or two, maybe scare 'em, or get their attention. but if they live, no one else kills them, they will come back to look for you, and that's what you want.
terrorists, on really small maps i actually enjoy the 9 silenced, with the lazer tip, but in most instances, i go with the glorious 552 sd'ed, and gripped. pretty similar there w/the m4. the ra-14 is really good gun, but i find most of the time to get the kills the way i play, i have to be alot closer, and that's def. going to take a little more getting used to.
(update 1) i recently unlocked the stg, and iw. i've talked about them on other threads, but i figured i'd update here. the iw, i'll start with i was the most excited about unlocking. to add a silencer, a grip, and a highscope i thought would make this gun all the much better. while i still haven't spent alot of time with this gun, i become frustrated w/it very quickly. it feels like with either silencer, more specifically silencer 1, the gun has less punch than any other gun in the game. i started off w/the highscope and the silencer 1, for the iw, thinking i could snipe out finally with a silenced high scope weapon, and i became corrected almost instantly. sure it can look that far, but it can't kill that far, ok fine, so i went to the front grip, like my regular setup w/the m4-sd, and found it takes almost twice as much shooting to take a man down. i like the way it works better w/out a silencer for getting kills, but then again, that's just not my style. i gave it a fair chance, i think the m4-sd'ed and front grip is still the best seal gun for quiet fighting.
the stg on the other hand i have had many ups and downs with. i'm still feeling it out. almost everyone i know loves that gun. i have had really decent games with the silencer and the front grip, and i have also had really awful games. i manage to get unbelievable headshots from decent distance w/only 1 or 2 bursts, and then again, i sneak around a corner into an hk5 silencer two, and i get smoked. i still stick w/the 552 as terrorists, but when i have a particularly good streak, i try to work a new gun (stg) into the game and hopefully get some confidence w/it when i'm already in a good situation. (finish update 1)
i often find myself in situations where i'm one or one of two guys left. i've gotten used to that. in suppression, i find, if i move around, looking for bad guys, i have a better chance of missing them, or getting gunned down in a head on fire fight. i just chill. when one guy comes past, and they will, after you cap him, believe me, the others will come looking for you.
it's a little more difficult in convoy, and control points i've found. i'm still working out my game plans with that. on control points, i try to stick w/in the 2 closest control points, the two we get the quickest, and, defend. if i have another defender it makes things easier, because we can both focus on one, and support the other in hairy situations. often, if there's a good enough spot, and you get the rushers running in, i'll wait till they start the control point, and bust in behind them, and cap'em down real quick, go back out and do it again. but that only works for a round or two. convoy is way more difficult, there is no effective game plan here, it's just all silencer skills. wether riding w/the convoy, riding behind it, there's vehicle battles, and on the other side, as a seal, or however, if ur destroying the convoy, just like sniping you find a cozy little spot, and right when they stop, you rain quiet fury upon the driver.
demolition i find is very similar to suppression in that now there's an object to end the game. if they have the bomb and ur outnumbered, you dont have many options. just look for the guy w/the bomb. know who has it, and try to pick him out of the group, cuz if he drops it, now you have focus. something that they have to come back to. and if they dont then fine. take the draw. if your outnumbered like a mofo, then no one can fault you for getting the best you could out of a bad situation.
(update 2) something else i feel like i left out before. depending on how comfortable you are with your quiet weapon, (especially at night) i feel like i am the "god" of the map. sure everyone uses night vision, but when they can't tell where your coming from, and theyre in 1st person, and they can only see 180 degrees, its alot more difficult for alot of people. i run'n'gun more often than i have before, as i realize on night maps it's harder for snipers to get ahold of you, they can see about as far as you can. if snipers in night maps are in the distance i dont hesitate to fire off a few bursts as i work my way towards them. if they can see me cuz i can see them, i'd rather take the first few shots, and try to knock off their line of vision while i'm working my way in closer. also, some people dont use nightvision. when i bum-rush a group of 2 or 3 people, if i get 1 to even up for my death i'm satisfied, if i can get 2, i'm happy if i can clear 3 out for just me, that's even better, but it sends them more into shock i think, that a guy w/a silenced weapon is rushing. if you can take 1 out quick, the others might not even notice where you came from, and you have another advantage.
another item i dont feel i talked about enough, are snipers. as a midrange silenced weapons guy, i have the hardest time dealing w/snipers. i feel very confident on a regular basis that i can handle assault rifles, and win the battles a good majority of the time. shotguns even on socom 2, i loved it when the terrorists used the m3. they could see me from across the map, but when they get in range, alls i will do is back up, and shoot. shotguns dont have enough range, and you can't catch up. sniper rifles are scary. you draw enough attention to yourself by killing the opponents a sniper will notice. the advantage a sniper has, is he probablly knows if your getting kills in a certain area, you're probablly sitting in his spot. i'd say sniping has contributed to the majority of my deaths. not that i can't handle a sniper, i know where he sits too, i just can't get their before i'm already dead. i dont know he's there till he kills me. sure i'll keep an eye on it next round, but usually i stay away from the snipers if i can. sometimes i wait in a safe area where i know the sniepr is till another teammate (test dummy) goes out. when i see him go down, i can usually section off 1/4th of the area in front of me as to where he might be. sure using a teammate as a test dummy isn't the nice thing to do, but in the end, if i warn them of the sniper (which i always do) and they go anyways, than darwin says he was not the fittest. unfortunately i'm happy with a draw. if i can draw it out, because another sniper wants to draw it out, unless it is the last chance to win, i will do it. if the game is ever (and i mean ever) on the line i will always be the first one to do what i can to win. i sacrafice myself on the regular in the attempt to win the game, because winning the game = more points than stats. (finish update 2)
i could go on for awhile, but i'm going to stop it right here, with a final word of advice. anytime playing socom regardless of what you "do" dont be stupid. if you have a game plan, go in there and stick to it. sure you make adjustments, but i notice more than anything, when you just up and abandon it, it almost never turns out the way you want it. in socom, there's no better feeling in the world then shooting at a guy, who's running in circles doesnt have a clue where you are, and getting that kill. being able to own people that didnt even get to take 1 shot at you. anyways, i dont know what anyone else feels, or if anyone has spent as much time with the silencers as i have, but it's becoming more integrated into normal socom 3 gameplay, whereas atleast i felt in socom 2, maps like the ruins aside, being someone that used the m4a1 sd on a regular required a special set of skills. a different way at looking at the way the battle unfolds, and a different style of thinking to get the same objective complete. everyone in my clan knows of me, as the guy who always uses the silencer. everyone i play with, if they want some help, or some tips about what to do, involving anything like that i help. i like seeing more focus on the silent kills. when i have a showdown with another silent killer, it's very special, like a sniper shootout y'know? alright i'm done, sorry for dragging it on.

p.s. if anyone has any questions, u can msg me, or if you think something in here is stupid, or irrelivant, i can re-word, or delete, just post, let me know. sometimes what i think in my head doesnt come out into words the way i'd like.
