Hacking CC Information from Sony?

I was curious, I have like 3 accounts. Now, I am afraid that if someone hacks into the server. Would they be able to use my Credit Card information to pay for stuff ? Thanks.

I dont thinkl that possible and even if some one hacks into it Sony will stop it before anything bad happens. Also you Credit Card number is secure cause if some one does steal it Sony can be dealing with a few billion dollars in law suits so they will keep it secure. Plus I heard all you CC info is deleted after three months.

No one is going to hack the server. This type of topic has been beat 70 feet into the ground. It won't happen.

Look at Xbox they have millions of people with credit cards paying for their service. No problems with them either.

Don't worry about it.

Whitesheep issue

Actually Whitesheep, I used to be of the same school of thought as the other two guys that replied to your question. Unfortunately I got a little scare just this past Monday night. For my SOCOM ACCOUNT i used a credit card which I have zero activity on and for which I have ONLY USED TO CREATE MY USER NAME - NOTHING ELSE. I keep it for emergency purposes. Anyway, on Monday night I got a call from MBNA asking about some suspicious activity on my account for a $100 even charge. They said the amount was suspsicous and also because I had no previous activity on the account (I keep my card hidden in my desk in the study). I asked them if it was identity theft or something else. He then told me that there are sites that can pull your "secured" information during any random online transaction and then sell your information to 3rd parties. Obviously this is illegal and consequences for the people that do this. These third parties then sometimes will try to make on line purchases, which is what they did in my case. Fortunately MBNA declined the transaction and then notified me about it. Bottom line, it is rare but it IS A REALITY. Would I lose sleep about it though......not too much but don't be naive and think it won't happen as I am a living example of a an attempted hacking.

Sony is not going to sell CC #'s off to make money. They are a billion dollar company. I guarentee you did something else with that card. Socom is not what did it to you. Do I know that for a fact? no but it is very very unlikely to happen.

I'll leave this open for now.

Mr. Pan - I agree with you that SONY is not out there selling CC #'s. However, I have never used this card. Believe me my friend, it took me 5 years after college to pay off the credit i built up in school so if I can't pay for something in cash nowadays i simply don't buy it. But saying that it didn't happen through them because they are a Billion Dollar doesn't mean a whole lot. I mean just yesterday YAHOO (another Huge company - not sure of their net worth) got nailed with a computer virus that allowed people from different locations to control computers elsewhere. Now if YAHOO can get nailed with some jerks out there integrating into their software, programs.....believe me SONY CAN ALSO. Pretty much most online transactions are "encrypted" now.....that is nothing new. That doesn't mean they are 100% safe though. Now my background is in mutual funds but I have friends that are software engineers and they will concur that nothing is 100% safe. Again, I wouldn't lose sleep over this Whitesheep, but it can happen.

Wow... both Pan and Boston sound really well informed on this topic and it will be interesting to see how this turns out if left open. My opinion, like Bman i believe that we would sue sony to the ground if any inkling of information got loose and release a fury of mouse and keyboard protests. Sony wouldnt dare do anything with our credit cards. Not even keep them for more than 3 months. Nothing bad will come of it.

The Credit Card information cannot be found on the online servers, as they are locked down tight. Not to mention, my Mom actually called Sony before she allowed me to use her credit card to verify my account. Sony assured her that the information is kept tight with many firewalls, which is impossible to hack. They also stated that the information is deleted right after it is entered into the server. It simply tried to do a transaction, if it is able to do it, your account is verified.

In a nutsell, no one can hack the SOCOM server, nor will everyone ever be able to get the credit card information. The charges on your credit card are from something else you might have done, or someone was able to get the numbers and used it.

Now Boston, I noticed you stated something about how nothing is 100% safe. I will agree, I have taken classes at school which told me the exact samething. Although, if someone does get into the system, how can they get information to something that isn't there?

Fidelity (an investment company has many social security #'s) had a laptop stolen awhile back. On that laptop was thousands of social security #'s. The laptop is thought to have been stolen for its value not its info. The info that held the social security #'s was encripted but if sold on the black market it could of been hacked with time. Fidelity sent emails, letters and called their people and warned them of this. They were told that their accounts are being monitored and if anything strange starts to happen they will be notified.

If sony got "hacked" they would probably do the samething. Not to mention what UNKNOWN said. If that is true than no credit card #'s are even kept.
