I question that. When I'm by the bonfire on Killing Fields I can spin my character and the sound of the fire will move around the room. If I face away from the fire the "crackle" will come from my back speakers, when I face toward it the "crackle" comes from the center/fronts.
There still may be no Digital Surround but Pro Logic may still work which will give you the same/similar effect. I'll have to investigate when I get home. It's goofy. Because Pro Logic I isn't really definitive from front to rear. The rears just provide ambient sound (waterfalls, helicopters, wind, etc) and aren't really localized in regards to more distinct sounds like gunfire or shouting.

But either way I have to figure this out cause I will not play Socom without some form of surround sound. Anyone know how to contact Zipper?

I have had similiar issues with my surround sound, part of the reason why i dont use it.

What i have expierenced was inconsistant levels of sound. Example: Im on the map boneyard and running around outside, the volume seems to be VERY low and i have to turn it up to hear. Then i run inside the boat and its just way too LOUD!!! I dont get why this is happening, but i had to play with the sound features in the online menu till for some magical reason, the volume levels out.

I would like to hear some solutions people have come up with to solve this problem.

As for what i am using for a stereo, its a technics reciever with an optical connection to my ps2. I will provide a picture as well below...

I have a Bose 321 system and while it does'nt have 5 satellite speakers it seems to mimic the surround sound experience fine. I did not see if you tried to disable the center speaker; and is the sub woofer working at all?

I have the same problem. Since day one, my surround sound works in single player but not online. I have a nice Pioneer 6:1 system. I looked up the problem back then and still no solution. I've messed with every setting in the game and on the system......no go. I gave up.

Weirdness. I figured it out. There was a glitch in the options menu of Socom 3. Turns out that it didn't matter if I selected Stereo, Mono, or Dolby the sound would only come out of the center speaker. I tinkered around in the options settings and once I clicked on "restore defaults" and then picked Dolby everything worked. Weird, I didn't have anything else changed in the menu except for Headset volume and when adjusted manually the surround would not work until I reset everything. Damn Zipper, seems they can screw this game up in every single way possible. I wonder if there's some way to get a refund still.

I've got a 32" Sharp flatscreen and a 5.1 surround system specifically made for PS2 (Kinyo Game Zone 5.1). The 5.1 will only work with socom using a "G9 DIN to 6 RCA" plug cable. The instructions say you have to have a "built in decoder" on the TV to accept the 6 RCA cables. All I know is I hooked the thing up with RCA cables, and I have sound coming out of all speakers.

In order to get mine to work I got a Toslink cable and then everytime I log on I have to enter the options menu (online- looks similar to non-online one), click on restore defaults, set all my settings again and then select dolby pro logic ii. After it saves the menu music will still play through only one speaker but as soon as I joing a game and the music "reloads" it's in surround sound and coming from all my speakers.

If I don't go through this tedious process then I have sound coming from only the center speaker. Weirdness.

Same problem here

I get the same problem, every time I enter online mode I have to go thru the tedious process of resetting dolby II (I've found that if you just click save settings and then cancel the save to memory card it works the same). Also of note it never saves my custom loadouts, and someone told me you have to logout properly for it to work. I think they might be related, but alas, I can't find this elusive 'proper logout' button.

Does the surround sound have to support Dolby Pro Logic II? Because I have been looking at this and it doesn't say it supports Dolby Prologic. Also, do you think it will work when I'm watching regular t.v.?
