Well I think your wrong, sorry but I do. I had a fatty almost 3 yrs ago, it was one of the PS2's from the series that eventually started to grind and the laser jacked up, so obviously that one died. Then after that I got a silver PS2 about 1 month later and to be honest that one ran fine but it didnt have the chance to break because I moved to the US a few months later. In christmas 2004 down here in Florida it seemed that we had a shortage of PS2 systems because of the terrible hurricane season so when I searched many miles away I found another fatty, no it wasnt a mirror of me, it was the PS2 I had been wating for along with the great release of that time (you know the one) and literally 1 week later it broke, it just stopped reading the disks and we sent it to be repaired and like thise horrible TV shows they told us that nothing could be done. So we took it back and got a sleak, shiny, slim PS2 which all my friends had been raving about. Still all this time since chritmas 2004 it has never failed me and I swear if it does this time it will go through the nearest window and preferably into my pool
Now who said it was just a bad experience?

I'm on my second Slim PS2. The first one did the same thing the op talked about. It was playing fine. I shut it off and it would never turn back on. I had to return it to Sony for replacement within the first three months. The worst part is that the PS2 they sent me for replacement has only a 90 day warranty insted of the 1year warranty. Basically cheating me out of 6months of coverage.
The second one has been fine but it DOES overheat. It resets or freezes all the time after a few hours of continuous play. I'm pretty sure that it does have a fan, however small and quiet. I don't think you can have a processor function for very long without a fan to cool it.

That is so funny. All I hear about is saying what a piece of total garbage the slim PS2's are since they overheat and what not. I have had my FAT PS2 since the first month they came out and it still works fine to this day.
On a side note: If you have a FAT PS2 that is broken and needs fixed or you just want to get rid of it check out this link.

i had a fatty since launch too, a little while ago it kept giving me read errors on certain discs (also damaging the discs a little) so i had to buy me a slim ps2.
it came to a point where i had to reset my fattie ps2 20 times a day just to start socom2 up :)
I guess no part is made to work forever, you just have to be careful and lucky i guess...
good news is i'm 1 ps2 and 1 tv away from having a triple screen setup on GT4 :)

Yes a lot of people have Slim PS2's that have died on them, but I swear if you do what i do...unplug the cord from the back after playing, im sure it will not have problems for a long time. I've been doing this for over 5 months now and there is absolutely no definate sign of problems. My brother, also to know is also a very loyal 27 year old dedicated socom player, has a slim PS2. I've told him about the strategy of 'the unplugging' and for a whole year so far, he has had no signs of a problem. Although, like every other hardware on the earth today, I do know that my slim IS going to die someday no matter what. I just still think that the slim is more than 100 times better than the fattie.

So, your saying that a work around for all the problems the slim has is to unplug it after use? You dont have to do that with the FAT PS2 so how is the slim one better?

The bottom line is that the slim and fat ps2's are exactly that...... PS2's. They both play the same games. The fat one is just an older less cost efficient design, so they came out with the new one.
Remedy: when you purchase your new video game hardware from a Gamestop, or EB games, they usually offer you an extra 1 year warranty for like $20. Take the warranty play your hardware out to the end of the warranty, and before it is up, return for a new one claiming some games work others dont, ( they wont be able to verify). If you can afford the extra $20 it is cheaper than buying a new system every couple of years. I do this for every system I own. My warranty on my PSP is up soon, maybe time to return for a new one. LOL
( Some of you may have problems with the ethics of what I have written. I am tired of getting raped by these companies, like when you buy a dogshyt game cough cough Medal of honor rising sun, or any of the conflict games, and you go to trade in the next week after you finish them or are just bored of them; they will give you back 25 bucks for a game that was sold to you for 50 bucks only a week earlier. They then resell for 45 bucks to the next guy. This was my way of getting over on these companies.)

I hate those damn fatass PS2's, had two of them die, one last for 3 years but it was constantly freezing or not reading discs, my slim is perfect, so quite I don't even know it's on. It has never gotten too hot either, I've thought about unplugging it but it doesn't get hot when it's off.

should've taken it back to where you got it. my fatty blew up, and i traded it in for a slim. it worked for bout a month then it just stopped working. i took it back to ebgames, and they just swapped it out, w/another new one. still got my 1year and everything. i did notice tho, the longer you leave the slims on all day/night, the louder it gets during regular operation.
