I'm kinda confused about what you are saying. You still keep the speakers hooked up like you normally would. You no longer use left and right channel audio inputs (red and white cables). The optical cable sends the sound channel (its actually light at this point)into the receiver. Its the only way to get true surround sound. It sends the information fast enough to send the data to each individual speaker. The receiver no longer uses the internal converter to change the output of the source to the speakers. ( Standard connection=digital-analog-digital conversion, i.e. digital signal out from ps2-audio cables are the analog source-and then the internal converter reverts the analog signal back into digital... note though, this is still only a stereo connection, with simulated surround sound.)
