You don't hit post a second time.
Thanks for the info, I may only recently joined the forums, but I'm a long time Socom-er. I have a few disagreements with range on certain weapons, but I'm not here to nit pick. Thanks again.

This does not make sense to me, because a 9mm has more 'stopping power' in it's effective range than a .223, since it is twice the diameter and bullet design is made for stopping a target, the .223 would have alot less stopping power at shorter ranges due to it's very high velocity which the bullet would rip through the target rather than stopping internally and transferring energy, 9mm would flatten and transfer much more energy to the target, and the 5.56mm is half the diameter of a 9mm causing a smaller would channel.
Just my .02
P.S. for those of you who are firearm-challenged, 5.56 refers to 5.56x45mm NATO which is an almost identical round to the .223 (Which M16, M4, AR15 etc. are chambered for).

The M14 fires a 7.62 round, though. You were reffering to the 5.56.

I'm pretty sure a .223 moving at nearly 3 times the speed of a .355 is more deadly. The .223 doesn't go right through flesh either. It has a tendency to tumble and fragment at shorter ranges. It lacks at longer ranges because it make a small wound and doesn't hit with much energy for a rifle round. You've got a lot to learn about "stopping power".

".....it has a tendency to tumble and fragment at shorter ranges....."
Actually, it tends to yaw more at regular ranges for this cartridge such as 200, 300yds., and at shorter range it will 'ice pick' straight through the target, especially with military-style rounds such as FMJ, JHP, etc., and it will not tend to fragment much with a FMJ especially at close range, unless you're using a v-max or nosler partition or similar style varmint round. Military rounds are made for penetration and to wound the target, not to cause a large wound channel like big game bullets. The only way I could see it yawing at closer ranges is if the twist is too fast and does not stabilize, but other than that the round is fairly stable throughout it's normal usage range. The high speed of the round combined with it's small diameter is what makes it 'ice pick' through it's target at shorter ranges, and at 100yds. a .223 will actually penetrate more steel than a .308 because of this. Speed, not diameter, is what penetrates hard targets. You're right about it being a poor round for longer ranges, though. Although, I have read an article indicating that, I believe it was the navy seals, used the Mk11 Mod0 5.56 sniper rifles to engage targets out to 600yds, although I agree that it's pushing the limits of a 5.56 round a little far.

And that's why we have the 7.62, or .308

NATO militaries or any miltary I've ever heard of for that matter don't issue hollow points. I believe it was the Hague Convention that banned them from conventional warfare. Although in most situations SEALs are deployed they can use them.

re.
It has been stated that the 50 cal rifles range is unlimited which i guess means 200+ meters. This is not the case, the highest distance on the most magninify scope (16x High) is 200 meters Anyhting over the shows a ---m reading in the corner when scoped in. This happened to me several times oon prowler when i had a clear head shot on a guy but it was over 200 meters and the gun did nothing when the cross hairs were pointed at this guys head, i shot several time and nothing happend.
