Open mics are terrible. Look at Call of Dootie. Every room has an idiot with his television too loud, someone blasting music, someone who kept their mic on while on the phone, babies crying in the background, etc.
Push to talk is by far the best.

You mean they didn't put the quick-mute in COD4 on the PS3?
Maybe it's because I'm rarely not playing with a full team of people I know, but open-mics have never ever ever been an issue for me. The few times that they were... highlight player, view profile, mute. Takes about 3 seconds to solve that one.
Best part is the mute stays until you remove it. I had a clanmate muted for a whole week.

Why hassle with that when push to talk doesn't require any of that? Plus, with open mics, you constatly get people trying to talk at once.
It's like coming to a four-way-stop at the same time as other drivers. You have the ones that wait for you to go, yet you're doing the same thing so no one goes. Or, you both are dicks that day and decide to go at the same time... you get it.
With small rooms amongst clanmates and friends, yes it works, but in public rooms, especially when you can have 15 other teammates, it does not work.

Eh, I guess. Maybe it's the PS crowd, but it's honestly not an issue where I play.
Maybe they should just make this one of the many host options so that those who want to have to push a button to talk to their team can have fun playing by themselves while all of the intelligent, mature people enjoy a game with open communication?
Either way, no matter if it's push to talk or open-mics, you're still going to have the people you don't want to hear that you'll have to mute.

Unfortunately, your last statement is correct.
I just think when playing in a public room, push to talk is the best.
For clan wars and things of that sort, I think open mics would be great, since clans or friends play with teamwork and useful communication.
With COD4's crappy "lobby" system, this does not matter, though.

I take it by the wink you weren't being serious, because it was worse for me when I played on the 360...

I very much dislike open mic, but 16 players on your team it is a must. When you have 10 or less push to talk is better. If you all are socom fans remember during games it was perfect no interruption, once you got in the lobby with 16 people you would sit there for 10 mins trying to press that damn circle button down. Open mic is fine but having to be within a certain distance to talk to that person ticks me off.

Even with small groups of people, the thing that ticked me off the most is that when someone else has the mic, and I have to get something across, I can't because they're talking.. So I'd always have to press COVER ME and they knew that meant to give me the mic... but with open mics, they could be talking and I could just yell out "Stop! There's someone around the corner! Go around the other way!" Same in the lobby... I'd rather listen to people be obnoxious that can be muted within 5 seconds... than have some jack _ _ _ hold the mic and I can't even say what I want to..

We utilized them in my clan when two people were covering a location and each covered an opposite direction. The "cover me" signified that someone was coming.
