I leave perfection to GoPre.
I disagree with the argument of better graphics cause more lag. That's just not how it works.
Lag is caused by more data traffic than a connection can handle. In online gaming, your data connection is only relaying details about what is occurring in the game. Stuff like where people are at, where they're moving to, what they're doing, who they're shooting at. Graphics are all handled on the client-side, which would be your PS3.
Graphics will contribute to loss of frame-rate. There's no real reason why the PS3 shouldn't be able to handle some serious graphics while it's processing everything being echanged on your connection. I know COD4 is an entirely different beast, but it is a fine example of how an online game with high-end graphics can still perform exceptionally.
Confrontation is still several months away, and I'm pretty sure we all know that polishing graphics is always in the final stages of development. As Mag said though, gameplay takes precedence over graphics, so I wouldn't care if it were Lego Socom so long as it played great.
