Gameplay wise, it is how Socom is meant to be. Yes there are very few "cosmetic" options such as friend lists, e-mails, message boards, ect. but the gameplay is much better. The maps are the same with only few differences between S2 and S1. The original maps are Blizzard, Ruins, Desert Glory, Frost Fire, Night Stalker, Abandoned, Bitter Jungle, Blood Lake, Rat's Nest, and Death Trap. You would suprised to hear Abandoned and Rat's Nest were amongst the most popular maps of the game.
The only real problems S1 had were the massive amounts of glitches and ability to use 3rd party devices on your console to cheat and hack their systems. They released a version of Socom1 in February 2003 known as "the february version" which prevented the user from doing many of the known glitches from the earlier version release in August 2002. Any copy you rent or buy now will have most of the glitches disabled. The only thing to worry about would be the hackers.
