SOCOM 1 was the pinnacle of the series, which is kind of sad when you think about it. Sure, SOCOM 2 had the best maps, and 3 and CA had customizable weapons and the like, but when it came down to pure gameplay, SOCOM 1 had that in spades. The cheaters not withstanding, I really enjoyed playing 1 over all the others. I think that had alot to do with hit detection and realism in the game. I don't know how many times that I'd have someone dead to rights on SOCOM 2 only to be blasted (the most memorable experience was standing behind a prone SEAL on Sniper Ridge with my reticle on the back of his head only to hit the ground two feet to his right!), or the insane hat dances of 3/CA. It didn't take a clip in 1, six shots was the most you needed to drop someone. Even the controversial things in SOCOM 1 (The "Electric Slide, for example) brought out some of the most heated debates ever. Now, people kind of shrug their shoulders and think of bygone days.
Having not played a PS2 SOCOM game online for almost six months now, I find myself wishing that Zipper had taken the best of 1 and 2 and made the ultimate SOCOM game. That would get me back in a hurry. Until then, I am going to pop on CA now and then just for kicks and giggles. Maybe the time away has done me some good and I'll get the bug again....
