the reason socom 2 was so well played is because its still basically the same game as socom 1 but wiht some major improvments. socom 1 was a ground breaking online game for the ps2, and the series still dominates it.
s1 has all the basics for the socom series. all the weapons were good (except the m14), and hte maps were all fun. but then some guys figured out that you can go online with a cheating device, and things pretty much went to hell. but it wasnt near as hell as the intl server on s2. i mean, people still play s1 without the cheats.
any way, s2 was virtually a user freindly version of s1, but had a lot of issues with lag and gliching, but that is not nearly as bad as cheaters in socom 1 (at least in my book). it was also a lot more biased twords the seals side, but the terrrorists could still kick *** if they camped on the right maps. the freinds list, the spectators, and user created taunts were major impovments, as well as better gameplay and graphics. it did suffer in terms of ease to kill (unless you used the iw on a crowed map, or a m3 in close quarters), but still has enough spunk. the fact that you didnt have to say godbye to almost any aspects of socom 1 is why so many fans love it.
after a while, it spawned countless minigames that we all loved, and still is friggin fun as heck to play most of them. to name a few, we have the all famous paintball, beam wars (chain reactions, run twords each other wiht 12 gauges, whoever falls off loses), Hide and Seek (fun as hell! my fav. seeking team and hiding team {switches every round}. seeking team tries to find hiding team and shoot them with the m9/m11. hiding team tries to draw it out. seeking team must hide in spawn [close eyes] for 30 sec- 1 min), Gladiator (in crossroads, teams go behind bridges. fighters have a 1v1 in middle, remaining members of team go in after the previous has fallen), Protect the Fort (usually desert glory mid building.) teams have a holding team and an invasion team. holding team runs into fort and tries to keep it until the end of the round. invaders try to take it over. whoever has it at the end of the round wins.),12 Guage Dules (usually on dg roof. teames go to the roof with 12 g pump. then 1 member from each team goes to the lower part and jump twice to signify ready. then they try to pump the other member. winner has to face next opponent from other team), Civil War (players all get m40 and line up side by side. then they charge other team with m40's and try to kill them all. no scoping) (another variation is all members line up on opposite sides of the vigi bridge {lower one} and out of scope try to shotgun opponents. this is sometimes reffered to as revolutionary war), Snipers Boundries (not really a minigame per say, but since the other team can **** it up, im calling it one. name implies the rules. dont cros the boundry line and snipe the other team)
Now there is a huge tear over socom 3. a lot of people just play it because its newer and has more features, but it still isnt as fun as socom 2 was (on a regular basis. theres always a time where either game is better). also a lot of people fear the lack of people on the previous titles. many say they would go back once in a while if there was more people on. and some just soaked up and love socom 3. thats not a bad thing at all. its a kick *** game way better than most. everything is customizable to your fit. and the vehicles kick ***. but the main reason why socom 3 is not nearly as poupular as it could be is because people had to say good bye to virtually everything from socom 2 AND socom 1, although it still has HUGE success and is one of THE MOST poupular games to date. Even with all the stuff lost, stubborn gmaers who dont have the same amount of fun as the old days still love to play socom 3 and dont mind some functions at all. an expansion pack containing the old maps and costumes of every socom 2 and socom 1 game would make virtually everyone happy to only play s3 for now on, although a semi expansion of the most popular socom 1 maps (not s1 maps remade for s2) and socom 2 maps (CROSSROADS!) will still pretty much do the job.
now people are trying to bring back some minigames from s2. ive seen hold the roof, where the team holding goes ontop of the highest roof in citadel (above the bombroom in breach) and hold it off. some people also have other games new to socom 3, live SUV races or triatholons (people run into a body of water, swim for a while, the run some more until they get a vehicle. usually harvester. totally unfun and bshit. usually requires team to have a mover where he takes a truck next to another one (unless they find an area with two, like near the seal bombsite in harvester) and a spec to watch for cheaters.
so, in my book, socom 2 has been the greatest of the three titles, mostly because it retaied all of the fun aspects of socom 1 wiht it. However, we have not yet seen the glory days of socom 3 yet, and my opinion may greatly change.
