This may upset some, but we've run into some issues with 'Visitor Messaging'.
Initially we enabled 'Visitor Messages' without the need for the messages to be moderated by users or staff. This eventually resulted in problems with members posting inappropriate material.
Then recently we made it so that 'Visitor Messages' were only allowed through Moderation. But members would still allow messages through that contained links to illegal / adult sites.. or posting offensive or explicit images.. or just racist or offensive comments in general.
At first there were just a couple complaints from some of our new members when it was first enabled...but it eventually increased over time.
Since we dont have the manpower to moderate and look over every person's profile everyday , and from the occasional complaints that have come in from new members, the only option was to disable it.
Is there a way to make it so visitor messages can only be viewed by your friends?
Edit: Nvm I guess that wouldnt stop the posting of inappropriate stuff.
yeah, its up to the member whether or not he/she allows them to be viewed by their friends only. So he/she could either forget or just allow "view from all". Which puts us back in the same boat.
So, why didn't we ban or punish those posting offensive material as we would if it were done in a public thread?
I'm pretty shocked here. I've never received any sort of complaint about any messages on anyones profile. I'm also surprised that new members made such a habit of perusing the profiles of existing members, and then were so inclined to send you a PM to complain of the material found on them.
Personally I hope that there's some medium that can be found here. I found the visitor messages to be better to use than the private messages because there was no cap on the number of messages you could have and the discussions were threaded. Being a mod and infractions sucking up a PM slot, I am constantly having to clear out my PM box.

May I just ask one thing? Why was there no warning? I mean I understand that people were sending inappropriate things but no one else new about this. I usually never go against you Lib but this time I think there should have been a notice or a warning before it got shut down. At least this way we could have tried to be more careful.

The warning should of been noticed when visitor messaging was switched over from un-moderated to moderated. Yet members were still letting things through that shouldnt of been.
Even if there was an official warning, there is no way to look over every member's profile everyday to know for sure if their breaking the rules.
And just addressing those handful of members doesn't guarantee others would do the same in the future.
I don't care whether it's there or not, but I have to wonder: Did you take a look at said member's profiles (or at least some of them) to see if these claims were true. I only ask because you didn't say if the claims turned out to be true or not. Also, a warning would have been better IMO. Then, just check the offending members every once in a while to see if they ignored the warning, and act from there. But, what's done is done.

The seldomly used Social Groups have been disabled as well due to all of this.

Thats affirmative. Some of the offenders already agnolige what they did wrong.
Its being discussed on a larger scale in the SM section. To prevent answering the same questions over again, im locking the thread for now.
