now i understand that you want to run a clean forum and don't want a whole bunch of cuss words in every post but i think that the censorship is a little too strong if i can't write the word *** without it being ***. were people abusing it too much in the past so you had to implement a strict policy, or do the mods and admins just feel that strongly about ****, ****, and *** that they need to censor them?
edit: the first set of * was the a-word, the three at the end of the post were the f-word, the s-word and the a-word

here's the way i see it as a member here.
1) it's a family oriented site so kids are likely to read it and it would be a real pain in the *** if some parent decided to raise a stink if they find out little johnny is running around dropping f-bombs cause he saw it here.
2) site rules are site rules regardless of the reasoning behind them.
3) i don't know about you but i can pretty much figure out which vulgarity is being blocked just from the context it's used in, so it's not a big deal anyway.
It's not that this is a family oriented community, but rather that if you can't properly convey your opinion without using expletives, then no one needs to hear it.
It's not the idea that 's offensive, or improper, it's just that it's not necessary.
With that said, my avatar may make me a tad bit hypocritical.

Couldn't of said it better myself, end of story nothing more can or will be said about this matter.
The guy does have a point. I have thought about it on a couple occasions. Our censor filter is very G-rated. I see no harm in a casual curse reference here and there. It shows expression / emotion.. Instead of trying to guess what **** means. But when people overly use it, thats where the problems start.
I think if the swear filter is opened up a little bit, people will start to abuse it. I could also see it leading to a slippery slope type ordeal where other rules may get less enforced.
But then you get people like Pan and me that really don't see the need to sling around curses. I don't need to curse to get a point across. I really only start cursing when I'm pissed.
IDK. But I think it's good to lay off on it a little bit because there are a few times I have trouble knowing what **** means in certain context. I'd say keep a sharper eye on the posts and see if there is an abundance of swearing or not and go from there.
is there any way to setup the swear filter to only work for certain members depending on their birthdates? can it be setup where any member under 18yo would see "****" and everyone else sees the actual word?
if that's possible then it might eliminate the abuse of the relaxed rules by the immature types since they wouldn't even realize the rule had been relaxed in the first place.
as for the older members who might abuse it just treat it like any other infraction. if they get too out of hand then throw a warning at em, then a suspension, and then an outright ban if they get really stupid about it.
I would have to vote that if you can hear it on Network television, such as FX and Comedy Central, then we should be able to use it here. I never had any problems with the censoring personally, but I can see both points of view quite clearly with proper arguments both for and against censorship on the site. While some minor words such as *** or **** would be fine (when used in moderation), other more extreme words such as the F bomb and the C word would definately cause commotion. We have a wide range of gamers coming and going daily with no age requirement to join the site. I'd rather not be the ones to cause poor vocabulary habits among youngsters. Then again, what do kids not see on television these days.

Yeah I'm sure there is an option of "Turn censorship off" for a certain user. It would be a pain though because lib would have to make a new group for people that are allowed to curse and the rest are not allowed. Its easier to just leave it alone.
Well, I think we could propose an age validator at the creation of the account or based on the birthday the user has now. If they are under the age of 16 or some other age decided upon they could only see stars for curses. However, if the user is older than the age indicated he could see the post completely uncensored. I am sure there is a way, but as Pan said it would take time and be a pain. Are the stars really bothing people that much? I never noticed and I spend a chunk of my internet surfing on vgf.
