Well i was bored over the weekend so i restarted my game on FF7 its been awhile since i played but the last time i did play i had just gotten vincent on my party i believe, however i dont remember that since it has been so long ago. Have tried playing again before this and found that im just really not great at the whole combat system and i could never beat the first boss, but this weekend i did and im starting to get into it again, what i was wondering is if theres anyone out there thats beaten the game without codes that can give me some pointers on using the combat system effectively instead of just attacking and waiting until the enemy dies lol. Thanks guys. oh and if this thread gets moved sorry i just figured this would be the best place to put something related to the FF& franchise.
Been playing it for the past couple days. The soundtrack is so awesome while high. It's soothing and freaky (well, some of the songs are) at the same time. I don't think that I've ever heard a more awesome boss battle theme (both the normal and the Jenova ones).

Everyone that I know personally that has played this game have beaten it without any kind of code. The game starts you off slow so you can get a feel for the game and combat system. Just keep playing and you'll get the hang of it.
I've never beaten it (could never beat Sephiroth at the end of the game), but I've never used cheats either. Only thing I've used was a strategy guide to find out where things are and how to get them (like the Knights of the Round Table summon), but that's it. For games like this, cheats take away from the experience.

Ya the games are kind of tough to get into though i mean you really gotta want to play them. I honestly played X just for the story as well as X-2 but i did beat them both without codes. I just didnt know if it was honestly possible to beat sephiroth without codes lol i mean he is the ultimate badass.
its been awhile since i've played, but leveling up is always the way to go in FF games. and to beat Sephiroth you must have Knights of the Round, which requires chocobo breeding.

To stand a decent chance against Sephiroth I would recomend being AROUND level 50-60 and it helps to have the Ultima Weapon for Cloud. If you don't know how to get it, towards the end of the game you just fly around the world and keep fighting the Ultima Weapon (big black flying weapon) until you defeat it. Having the "Slash All" materia (I think that is what it's called) mastered is very useful as well because you can with each hit, Cloud can easily do 9,999 damage to each hittable part of Sephiroth.
Another key thing to remember is that you need to fight him defensivly. You must constantly be healing and curing status changes. Even if you have full health, it helps to have one party member constantly healing everyone.

I beat the game on more than one occasion. I worked my ass off to get Knights of the Round and all the final limit breaks. I still have the PsOne version but I am thinking about buying it for my ps3 since it was released on the Playstation store.

With the first boss, the most important strategy is to switch the order of your characters (Moving them to the back or front rows). In the back row, characters deal less damage, but they also receive less and in the front, it's the opposite. I'm guessing you don't know but if you do, I apologize, I'm not trying to treat you like an idiot! In the menu screen, move the cursor over Cloud or Barrets' pictures and select them, you should see their pictures shift either to the left or to the right. To the right means they're in the back row, to the left means they're in the front. This is extremely useful against the first boss as his laser attack can be devastating. Blast him away with the Lightning spell and you should be golden.
The materia system is one of the best and easiest systems the FF series has come up with, it just may look daunting. Equip characters with materia to give them spells, abilities, summoning powers, or special perks (additional HP or MP) and attack techniques (like 2X attack which allows you to attack twice). Materia level up through AP. Materia takes much longer to level up but when it does you unlock new spells as the materia grows more powerful. Fire will level up and grant you Fire 2 and up to Fire 3, each which has increasing power.
The most important materia (Arguably) in the game is All. When you equip a weapon or armor, you'll see that it has slots. Slots that are connected allow materia to work off of one another. If you place your Fire materia in a combo slot with All, you will be able to hit all enemies on screen with a fire spell. However, you can only hit all enemies as many times as All is leveled up (level 1 = 1 time). Not to mention, a fully upgraded All materia is worth around 1 million gil!
Lastly, each weapon has a growth speed. Most weapons will say Normal. However, there is also None, Double, and Triple all of which relate to AP gains. If a character has a weapon with Double for materia growth speed, you'll obviously become more powerful a lot quicker. Also, pay attention to the bonuses a materia gives your character in terms of stats such as HP, MP, strength, magic, etc. It's very easy to customize characters this way especially if you want to build a specific team such as a team of offensive magic casters or a mixed team with a set of different abilities (such as a mage type character who focuses solely on magic, an attacking character with brute strength, and a support character to heal and cast support magic).
If you need anymore help, PM me. I'm a slight loser due to the fact that I beat FFVII at least a dozen times through in the past ten years.

I never did look up a guide and go through all extras in the game...like that underwater Weapon (diamond?) that hits for 8,000 dmg that I've nearly forgotten about...don't think I've ever gotten Vincent or Knights of the Round but I've heard it was extremely long. I'm not sure if my game has a glitch with the Ultima Weapon or what but he keeps running away when I hit him...and I don't mean I enter battle and he runs, I mean he just runs. Not sure if its a good or bad thing that the main story can be beaten just by leveling up.

The underwater guy is Emerald and he's a royal **** stain. The only way to beat him is to have a maxed out Final Attack materia paired with Summon Phoenix that way you can revive your guys when he kills them all in one hit . . . which happens often.
I never got Knights of the Round either, but you can get it two ways. You can either raise a Gold chocobo, which can be fun but time consuming. Or, you can beat Ruby Weapon and give the item he drops to this guy in . . . some random town, I forget, and he gives you a gold chocobo. So one way is hard and time consuming and another way is hard and time consuming, take your pick
