It's pretty much my favorite RPG ever and I consider it one of the greatest stories ever told. Seriously. I know that's giving it too much credit but holy crap it was amazing.
Also, Parasite Eve. Legend of Legaia was a GREAT B-level RPG, probably one of the best not mainstream RPGs out there.
In that era, I wasn't big on RPG's very much... Suikoden 1 & 2 were the only one's I had owned at the time. And I'm surprised nobody mentioned them because I loved them.
I played it briefly it was ok. I agree that the best rpg's were on the SNES and PS1, however part of it could be that I was much younger back then and the games stuck with me more then they do now.
Suikoden 1 was fantastic. Never played the sequel.
II was alot better. More characters, bigger story, better graphics. The only reason i dont list those games in any of my lists are that it looked very cheezy, like a RPG majer game. I didnt really like the sotry enough for them to be in my mind when i create these lists, but great games none the less. Or maybe the character collecting got me.I dunno.

this went through perfectly! didn't think it would happen.
maybe it was that the RPGs then were limited to simple graphics and a simple UI, so they really had to make up for it in content. FFVI was great, FFVII was amazing. but look at the graphics in FFVII. the characters are deformed and the characters would walk into cloud when your party is formed. it was tacky as hell, but the game was so effin great that it didn't matter. anti-aliasing is overrated!
any of the "secret of (insert RPG-like word here)" games were great.

Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana are my all time SNES favorites. Legend of the Dragoons and FF7 for PS1. I will say that there are some fantastic RPG's on PS2 though. Might I suggest The Summoner for PS2. It wasn't promoted much, but it's one of those games that you can play for hours to beat, then play again only to discover how much more there is to the game. It has a ton of side quests so it's never boring and the story has a really interesting twist. I'm still discovering games that didn't get much in the way of adverting and I'd have to say that there are just as many good ones on the PS2 as there were for any other system. The only thing that I miss for PS2 is the multi-disc games.
I have alot of ps1 rpg's. It's my favorite era. Some of my favorites are Grandia, Xenogears, and Front Mission 3. I missed out alot on the Snes era. But I enjoyed the Final Fantasies and Breath of Fire games.
One of my favorite PS1 RPG's was The Legend of Dragoon. The storyline and battles were great, and spent the best 6 months of my life playing it. I never see it talked about anymore. :(
edit: Okay, it WAS mentioned. But someone said it was meh. MEH! Oh well.

The SNES and PS1 definitely had a great selection of RPGs. Sega's systems had some good ones, too - Shining Force, Phantasy Star, and Lunar for instance. SNES and PS1 out did Sega just on the sheer number of quality RPGs, though.
The games today are, to me, in a completely different genre than the games of PS1 generation. There are so few turn-based RPGs now that these games are hard to compare to todays games. I think that the stories in that generation are much better than the ones used today. Hell, Metal Gear Solid 4 has the best storyline that I have played in a long time.
I also loved playing Legend of Dragoon. I went back and played through it again about a year ago. It was very nostalgiac lol.
