How to record SOCOM

RECORDING SOCOM WITH A COMPUTER CLOSE BY

By Otter

This is the basic setup on how to record SOCOM when you either have a laptop or your computer is close to your TV.

Products:

I'd reccomend the dazzle line, simple, easy and good quality. I have a Dazzle 90, so let's work with that.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099392683463

If you have Dazzle 90 then you will need this cord in order to record and still be able to see your SOCOM on the tv at the same time.

Mad Catz - Universal S-Video / Audio Cable - BGS060150

You don't necessarily need that particular brand, but make sure it's a composite/s-video cable for the PS2.

Windows Movie Maker is what I would suggest to start recording and editing your footage. You don't need to buy it. It comes standard with windows XP. Go Start -> Search -> Windows Movie Maker.

Setup:

Setup is easy if you have a laptop or a computer near your TV, here's how I have mine set up:

You have Dazzle's usb cord in your computer.
You have your s-video cable in your ps2 in one end, and the 3 coloured ends (two audio and one video) in the TV in their appropriate places.
You then have the s-video end of your ps2 cable in dazzle's s-video hole. So that means dazzle has to be close to the end of the cable with the s-video and audio/video ends.

Here's some pics:

Here's the s-video cable in the back of the ps2 where the normal cable would go:

Here is the s-video cable end I'm talking about, and the audio/video ends in the TV:

Here's the s-video cable in the TV in their appropriate spots and the s-video end in the Dazzle:

Here's an overview of the whole thing, bit messy, yeah, oh well.

How to actually record:

Cool, it's all set up, now you probably want to know how to work it all. :D
  • Open Windows Movie Maker
  • If the "Capture Video" menu isn't showing, click the down arrow beside it. It should already show though.
  • Click capture from Video device
  • Click Dazzle DVC 90. In "video input source", drag down to S-video, NOT composite. Don't worry about the audio.
  • Call your footage whatever you want and save it to whereever you want.
  • Leave the next feild as it is, you want the best quality.
  • You'll then be ready to capture whenever you want. Just hit Start Capture.
  • When you're finished and done recording, hit stop record, then hit finish.
  • Make sure "Create Clips when Wizard Finishes" is checked off too.
TIPS

To save space while recording, whenever you die in SOCOM, hit Stop Record, then when the next round starts again, hit Start Record, that way it's only you playing and you don't have to worry about tons and tons of wasted footage.

That's all I can think of. Any problems post here or PM me. BTW, if you're wondering what Dazzle 90/s-video quality looks like, here's a video I did, the s-video cable really helps, s-video is real good quality:

HOW TO RECORD SOCOM VIA DVD/VCR

By Discombobulate

Ok, here's my tutorial for vcr/dvd/other recording. Hopefully otter will edit this into his first post so people will see it easier *hint hint*

Before I start, I want to clarify that when I say vcr/dvd I mean a vcr or a dvd burner. Whichever you have/use.

Here's the setup, you do not have to, but may get better quality if you use an S-video adapter. It is entirely optional, I do use it myself. Your set up will be as follows:

1) PS2 with composite out put running into your vcr/dvd burner.
2) Vcr/dvd burner running an output into your tv.

The cables are running in through a video/audio input slots. You'll need to throw a blank dvd/tape into your player. Now, your vcr/dvd should be already connected to your tv, and you should change your tv to the proper channel (usually input or "tv/video"). Now you want to change your vcr to the proper channel to see your Socom on it. Usualy an input channel. (Mine says L2 for "Line 2")

Once you are all set up, your PS2 connected to vcr/dvd which is connected to your tv, you should be able to see Socom. Once you do, all you have to do is press record, just like you would to record a tv show.

After you finish owning noobs, you're going to take your vcr/dvd player over to your computer. (I use a portable one, not as big.)

**Note: Not everyone needs to know this, if it doesn't apply to you, just ignore it and move on**

My dvd player output cables are in the wrong direction I guess you could say, so they have to be connected to another set and plugged in. Most people will just have one set of cables running out of their vcr/dvd and into their capture card. Just like they come out of your PS2, then you can just plain plug those into the capture card.

**Note: If you record on dvd, you may very well be able to play it straight on your computer with a dvd drive.**

If you have a vcr, I pretty much already summed it up, but I want to be clear. Just take your vcr over to your computer, and plug output cables into your capture card. It's that simple. You can also use a normal dvd burner/player as well, it works the same way. Mine is only different because of the portable dvd player.

You can now follow Otter's tutorial for capturing. It is pretty good. You can just use movie maker like he suggested, it's very simple. I would suggest using the software that comes with your capture card though, it usually records at higher quality than movie maker. As far as editing, you can start with movie maker, like I said, it's very simple. After that, you can move on to bigger and better things.

Once you make your movie and save it to your harddrive, host it. You can use any of these fine hosting websites:

Putfile - Share Your Photos and Videos for Free!

YouSendIt: The Leader in File Delivery. (It will give you a link to the video after you email it to someone, or just leave emails blank and it will give you link to video)

How to Record Socom Without AV cables

Stickied by Go Pre

This is how to record Socom if your TV looks like this:

The first thing you need is an "RFU Adapter":

As you can see, the cable plug goes from the RFU Adapter straight to the TV. You will aslo need any type of Pinaccle Dazzle or capture card. I have a Dazzle 80, so I guess I'm going to have to do it with that:

The last thing that you will need is this awesome cable:

Plug the AV (Audio Video) cables into the RFU Adapter like so:

Then plug the extra cable (S-Video Cable) into the Dazzle (or whatever capture card you have):

Finally Plug the other end of the Dazzle (USB Cable) into your computer:

Now you are ready to start recording... open your program, go to capture, then have it record the SVideo instead of AV... hit record, edit, produce, get ratings...

Then host it at a hosting site such as RapidShare Webhosting + Webspace
Happy Movie Making

Good tutorial, am I going to have to make one for vcr/not-near-PC people? I might.

Edit---

The second tutorial is mine, I see otter didn't bither to give me credit.

This would intrigue me but there is one huge problem. It would cost me $90 bucks that I don't have. I gotta pay my rent fool! Good tutorial though, nice hands, good brushing effects on your hand. Thats some real good photoshop usage, because we all know Otter is really black.

Who says that you can make stickies whenever you want? This is just another example of mods abusing their power.

With my capture card (WinGo plus), I plug a cable (I don't know the name of the cable, but it's the round one with the wire that goes into TVs) into the PCI card on the back of my computer.

Buy a DVD Recorder. You can get one at BestBuy or Wal-Mart. It has multiple input devices. I input my Cable, DVD Player, PS2 and XBox into the recorder, then take the video out of the recored into the TV.

You can record anything you want. If you buy DVD-RW's you can use the same disk a bunch of times without quality loss on the same DVD. Once your DVD is done, the recorder comes with session management, so you can finalize disks and sessions.

Take the DVD to your computer, if you have a DVD drive, and convert to .VOB into .MPEG, and then you can do whatever you want with it. I toyed with maybe buying Dazzle, but I decided if I was going to record anything, might as well get my money's worth out of it. Now, instead of buying DVD's or renting from the video store, I record right from Cinemax, HBO, etc. Sometimes I'll even record a movie from Comcast On Demand.

Just FYI.

Thanks otter......that is really good work and an excellent way of explaining how to make a video. You even went the extra mile on posting where to buy the cables and having pics on how to install. Not many people on here would do such work for others. I don't plan on making one yet, but if I ever do, I will be sure to come back to this topic. I didn't have a clue on how to make one before I seen this post. Thanks for taking the time to help a lot of people out, especially me. Thanks again otter.......

btw a great dvd ripper/converter is imTOO. the free trial lets you convert the first 5 minutes of video, so if you stop recording after every 5 minutes and start recording again, you can pretty much get away wihtout paying. i on the otherhand plan to buy it so you dont have to stop in the middle of a game to do this.
