I disagree... sort of. Without direct French military aid in North America itself the war would have taken much longer, thats true, but without French hostility in Europe the revolution would have been crushed by a much larger British force available for deployment overseas. It was always clear that lands as rich as those of the USA wouldn't remain a colony forever though and perhaps in the context of the Napoleonic wars, or whichever large European conflict was raging, considerable freedom would have been granted in return for services rendered, leading to independance soon after. The monarchy have considerable flaws but they have always been realists... better to relinquish control after a revolution is beaten than wait for another one to appear!
Back to Omega's point about the Revolution, and its meaningfulness as the genesis of the nation... what about Korea and Vietnam, the two wars thought because of the Domino theory to protect the American way of life indirectly? What makes them so unattractive?
