all of those seem to be pretty tough in their own way.. but if i have to choose between the four, Id say rugby. This is all just based off of watching of course though
I played hockey long enought to say with assurance that it is extremely taxing on the body and is a very tough sport. You have to be a little insane to play it I feel...or at least, that's what I think after having played a few games with my Canadian cousins (bunch of loons).
However, I'm going to go with American Football on this one. There is a reason it's only played once a week.

Compared to football it is so much harder/ tougher in the sense that you don't stop moving. Football has downs and you get breaks and unless your a lineman your not always getting hit. If you are numbered 1-8 in rugby you will be tackling or be tackled once a minute. and then 9-15 is either always running or being tackle by 1-8. Also the no pads is obvious. I tackle as hard in football as when I play rugby and the fact that you don't have pads just makes it hurt that much more
The real battle is between rugby and hockey. Hockey there are really no breaks like rugby and unlike football but there are also pads worn... a lot of pads worn. There are a lot of hard hits in hockey but when you think about it, they are not essential to the game and happen less then in rugby. With rugby you get worn down a lot more and faster since you are always hitting or being hit and you need to be tougher. In hockey you'll get hit a few times a game but rugby its at least 30 to 40 times if you are a forward.

There is a reason... football players are whimps. Not only do they sometimes go weeks without playing, but when they do play, they play less than half the game, with plays once every few minutes that only last five seconds.

Show me a huge hit in rugby that the player was down for the count. Just because they don't wear pads doesn't mean squat. In hockey, you are traveling at five times the speed on something ten times harder. You do not get hit 40 times a game in rugby.
I'm still waiting for someone to post some rugby hits that can even compare to a few hockey hits shown.

I picked this out because I watched it happen. Colts <3
Notice how he hopped right back up, though? It's a big hit, sure, but nothing brutal.

Football is my favorite sport by far but hockey is much for enduring and brutal. Football they hit hard but they have all the gear and soft turf, hockey has ice which is as hard as asphault and they have solid boards, I would say thats hands down. Golf is probably the hardest to play but brutal wise, not sure why the hell its on the list.
I am surprised no one has spoken about Hurling yet, it is quite possibly one of the most dangerous sports out there.
It's pretty much Men's Field Hockey with a 10 pound ball, huge sticks that you can hit the ball and the players with, tackle anyone in site, and the ball usually travels around 70-80 mph.
My sister's fiance's friend over in Ireland plays for a Semi-Pro team in Kerry County and has a large, large dent in his head from the ball hitting him smack in the head over 7 years ago. He has still yet to wear a helmet, and has since shattered his hand and broke his orbital (2X).
Hockey and Men's Soccer are pretty far up on my list too. I have played soccer for over 12 years and I have seen countless injuries as a goalkeeper. For instance a couple of months ago, I went down for a break away save and broke a kids Fibia, and gave him a pretty good concussion, a week later I break my nose in 4 different places(I had no idea there was 4 different bones in your nose).
Three weeks later a good friend of mine breaks his collar bone and his arm after getting slide tackled by a striker at a tournament down in Florida. The same tournament I break my nose again, but the funny thing is I can breathe better.

If there is only one thing I need to prove, it is that I am better than what people think I actually am.
I have played lacrosse, football, baseball, wrestling, basketball, and now rugby. Some may say Hockey is the toughest physical sport, but Rugby is definately the toughest physical sport.
If we are going for toughest as far as stamina goes I would vote Soccer.
I would say it is between Hockey and Rugby, but you have pads to protect you in Hockey. All we get is a scrum cap and underarmor shoulder and rib padded shirts if that. Very physical. Very fun.
Hockey get's ya pretty banged up. Lacrosse is not too bad, the sticks do not hurt when they are cranked at your arms. you have padding. football is intense, but you have tons of padding. rugby, wow, it's just brutal. hockey and rugby...IM SAYING HOCKEY because of skates.
Racing is clearly the most dangerous/deadly sport out of those choices, it's not even something to think about or vote on. It's blatent.
As far as violent... I'd go with either Hockey or Rugby. Hockey in the long run though, because you can get hurt pretty easily/badly in both, but you don't see a whole lot of fistfights on professional rugby, at least I never have.
