Funnily enough it was a ruck that did it. Its not really the tackling that the worry with rugby, its what happens afterwards... the biggest fellas from each time just pile on.
They really dont just pile on because once your knees hit the ground your out of play and have to get out of the way... So piling on does nothing. It was probably by a guy trying to secure the ball from his tackled team mate and he got hit hard himself...
In the Rugby World cup that England won (2004?), didn't Johnny Wilkinson play some of the game with a fractured/broken neck? I can't remember completely, but I'm pretty sure he did.
He also won us the game!
When I did rugby at school, the teacher was very strict on us doing the scrums right because he witnessed a kid have his neck broke at another school. Rugby is brutal at any time, but is deadly when it goes wrong.
While Rugby is purty high up there, Water Polo is definitely on the top of my list of most difficult sports. I've played water polo for the past two years, and it still kicks my butt. It's so much fun, though. ^.^

This is a poll about the physically toughest sport, the most brutal sport.

So I take it that none of you have played water polo. lol xD If you have, you would be agreeing with me. More than once have I come out of the pool with bloody noses, scratched face, etc. You guys have nooo idea. XD

Bloody noses and a scratch on the face?
I've had quite a few friends who used to play water polo. I know that scratches do not compare AT ALL to this:

Whoever the 5 people that voted for soccer, are dumb.
Soccer doesn't compare to many other sports. Yes, it can get brutal at times but all of the euro leagues are filled with vaginas, sissys, and dramatic actors.
Whenever a player get slightly fouled (mostly times when it's not a foul at all) That player will hit the ground, roll around all over, act like they're in so much pain and all this just to try and pull a foul out of the other team. When players realize the ref isn't calling anything, they'll get up and run around like nothing happened. It's so dumb and that pisses me off.
That's why I like MLS over any Euro leagues. MLS teams actually have pride and dignity when they play. It may not be as popular but at least it's not filled with vaginas.
