Also, if they make a slim PS3, it won't have BC. Pretty much guaranteed.
Motherboard with BC, and motherboard without BC on the right.
(The chips in the picture are still the size that they started out as, although they have shrunk since. Will soon make another shrink down to 40 or 45 nm, don't remember.)
Although, I do suppose they can have the BC in there, but the width and length will be pretty much the same as it is now. You would think they would want to make it smaller in those aspects as well, if they were to make a slim.

Could the smaller board support software BC? I remember the first American PS3s supported BC via hardware, then we got shat on, of course, and our first machines got software BC, then they took it out altogether. At what point were the smaller boards introduced - was it between hardware and software BC, or between SW and no BC? If it's the former, then I don't see why they couldn't do it, and in fact I really don't understand why they don't just put it as an option on PSN, because I'd buy it.

Well...when it was software BC, I am not completely sure if there was anything that was needed on the actual hardware, besides having the whole ps2 chip on the board.
If it is something that can just be downloaded, hell...Sony should take advantage of that. Sell the ability to emulate PS2 games on the PS3 for like, 20-30 dollars, whatever. I am sure it would sell like crazy. If that is at all possible, I am assuming they are not going to do it until they stop producing the PS2...and honestly...it will be awhile before they do that. They are making a profit on PS2 sales. Once PS3 manufacturing costs are low enough, I would assume that is when they will stop producing the PS2.
Either that, or whenever Atlus moves the SMT series over to the PS3, because that is the only thing keeping the PS2 afloat now, lol.
I think they would offer individual PS2 games for download before they think about giving BC back to the players. They would make a much higher profit on that. Selling individual PS2 games for 10-20 dollars. Obviously a lot of people would buy MGS2/MGS3, Shadow of the Colossus, Dark Cloud, Gran Turismo games, Ratchet and Clank, Jak, Sly, Syphon Filter, Ico, etc etc. Just off Sony published PS2 games, they could make a lot of money. Then offering third party titles to be uploaded would be better for the players, while still bringing in some cash for Sony.
I think a service like that would make the PS3 much more appealing to a lot of people. Or at least make Sony a lot of money.
Not to mention that most PS2 games are in a reasonable size limit for download, especially after they get compressed a bit. All of them would probably fall between 1-4 gigs on average.
Wow. That looks pretty sweet actually! And the box art more or less confirms the PS3 slim in my mind.
Do we know if it's confirmed that the UMD drive will be gone? That's a pisser if it is. I heard another rumour about putting pods in stores that will convert your UMDs to digital, and I thought if that's true, I'd just spend a day in gamestation buying, converting and trading.
Let me put my two cents in on this one.
IMO, PS3 has not even been successful enough to warrant a slim version.
PS3 has been lacking in sales due to price, and not so many great games. They have focused on graphics, and left behind the story and gameplay. And the thing to ask, how many of you buy blu ray discs for PS3 to watch movies? How many of you actually surf the net with it? I don't think those features would be a great loss.
I own a Wii and don't use internet on it much at all. And I prefer having a separate dvd player to begin with.
As for the PSP Go, it may look good, but it will be overpriced like the first one was.

The slim version of a console isn't necessarily due to the success of the console. The biggest advantage to them is to simply cut production costs, and to possibly make the system more appealing.
Not so many great games? Get out of 2007 plz, thanks. That is such an ignorant excuse, that I am sick and tired of hearing it.
Also, the whole focusing on graphics thing is a load of bologna. Look at some of the best looking (graphically) exclusive games on the PS3. Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 1/2, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone 2, Valkyrie Chronicles, Resistance 1/2, Gran Turismo Prologue/GT5, MLB 09 The Show.
So....which ones "left behind story (for those that should have story, not sports or racing games) and gameplay"?
