Sony has dropped a brand-new feature on its PS3 console that will let you buy Premium themes—specialized themes that contain high-quality graphics, customized buttons, and (sometimes) special sounds. Since they cost real money, PS3 users will have an option to preview the images before deciding to drop the cash. The company plans on releasing 6 to 10 premium themes every month, which will run the gamut from anime-styled to NCAA-franchised content.
True. But I'd be willing to pay $1-$4 for a cool theme. In which I could still see XMB icons while in a game. Anything over $5 would be ridiculous though.

So I believe once u start playing online you will be hooked on the drug that we socomers call So-crack. Its just that addictive. PSN name: Paul_MooneY Rollin w\ [DPG]
*sigh* Sony too? Why do console makers suddenly see the need to nickel and dime us to death?
Difference with Sony, is that it isn't even close to being mandatory if you want to enjoy the specific features. Free themes, and user made themes are still available.

Yeah, I don't see this as being some sort of pitfall. It's all the same, just an added "bonus" to people who want to spend their money on themes. I highly doubt I'd ever feel the need to do so... but maybe if there's something I absolutely love I'll consider it. I like that we'll get to preview them too.

It's too bad 360 users don't have the same luxury. It's dumb trying to buy something and you don't have proper information as to what it does or looks like.

Thankfully, it will be a feature in the new dashboard.
This doesn't bother me since I never download any themes. Plus, as zero mentioned, there will still be free themes available, if and when I choose to use them.

Yes, true, but it's more the principal of the matter. They're charging for something that really should be free. It's a step in the wrong direction for them.

But Sony is not making these themes. A third party company is, and of course they would charge for them.
As PS3 and PSN become more popular, expect a lot of companies wanting to sell their goods through it. Especially as these gaming consoles get farther away from gaming. They are becoming glorified media hubs (annoys the hell out of me). Mainly because they know most console gamers are idiots that would buy things like this, so they know they can make a profit.

Why should they be free, again? Someone, somewhere is spending time making these themes. Just because you've gotten used to themes being free this past couple of years doesn't mean that they should be free. If you don't want them, don't pay for them; it's that simple. It's not as if your PS3 needs a theme to function, is it?
Because they're a bunch of pictures and sounds that a programmer or two could probably throw together in a day. It isn't as though we would actually be paying this guy for his work anyways. In all likelihood, Sony would just pocket whatever money was made off of it anyways and the guy who made it wouldn't see a cent of money more than what they're already paying him. Honestly, these themes essentially boil down to a couple of pictures or screenshots. Is it really fair to make people pay $2 or $3 for some screenshots?

You don't think $2 is fair for a day's work? If it's really that simple just create your own theme and have done with it. It doesn't matter how long it takes. If somebody has created something that you like then why the hell shouldn't they expect to be paid for that work?
I'm a techie by trade. If I get summoned to some guy's house to fix a PC and it takes me 5 minutes to fix, am I expected to walk off without payment because it was an easy job? Hell no. And this is no different. If somebody can do something for somebody else that they can't or won't otherwise do by themselves, then that person can reasonably expect to be compensated. I really don't understand your argument.
