That has nothing to do with it. Even a 10mb router is at least 10-15 times faster than a cable/dsl connection.

Actually the length of an ethernet cable can make a difference in the quality of the connection, if it's a cheap cable on top of being long, or has other defects. Don't be cheap on buying a network cable, make sure it's at least CAT5. Otherwise you can end up with a poor connection to your router/cable/dsl modem, resulting in dropped packets that have to get resent or just plain lost.
