M16A1- Traingular foregrip, Three prong flashider, Non-Removable carryhandle, No optic rails, No forward assist. Fully automatic. After the vietnam war the goverment changed the A1 to a single shot and 3 round burst. Due to excessive "spray and pray" techniques used in vietnam. Before the M249 squad automatic weapons(SAW) was put into service each squad had 2 m16a1s acting like a full auto support weapon.
M16A2-(most common) - Tubular foregrip, Birdcage flashider, Non-Removable carryhandle, No Optics rails, Forward assist.
Now the A3 and the A4 all have a tubular foregrip But it is a RIS. For mounting lights lasers optics. etc.
The A3 and A4 models all have removable carryhandles for mounting optic sites.
