These people keep stealing my ideas. I'm glad someone took the time to explain it. It could've been more descriptive, but it gives a good idea of how "lag" works.

What the guy in the article forgot to mention is that it's our fault for lag, not the server's. The faster your connection to the host, the less lag there is.

Yeah, I always hear people complaining about how much the server sucks or something.

THEN AGAIN ZIPPER SONY SHOULD MAKE A TEST CONNECTION AFTER DNA TEST IF YOU ARE UNDER 3 MB YOU CANOT BE HOST(OR SOMTHING LIKE THAT WOULD FIX UP SOME LAG...sorry for the cap lock just realise it was on~!~!!anyway i think being the host should go with the next fastest connection and not the next oldest person in the room!
Your download speed will not have as much effect on the lag as your upload speed. Because the host has to upload the information to the players, if you are on a DSL connection with about 150Kbps (or less) upload speed, the game will lag. The reason why most people advise that you use a Cable connection is because most cable connections have a higher upload speed like Road Runner (385Kbp/s upload) or Optimum Online (1MBp/s). I personally have both Verizon DSL and Time Warner's Road Runner. When I am online with Socom, I use my Road Runner connection, not because I have a fast download, because of my upload. Especially since Road Runner doesn't Cap (limit my uploads), the game doesn't lag as much as if I used my DSL connection. If you are not clear about what I'm saying, try this: Use one of those file sharing programs like Kazaa or Limewire, wait until people are downloading from you and then log on to Socom. You will lag because while they are downloading from you, you are uploading to them. You uploads will greatly affect your download. If you are uploading at maximum speed your downloads will drop drastically, therefore you will lag a lot. On another point your game can only be as fast as the slowest connection. If someone in the game (note: pretent this person is not the host) has a poor connection he/she will slow down or lag the game because that person also has to upload information to the server.

One thing you all forgot about is routers. If you have 2 computers and 2 PS2s on 1 connection and are all running at once, well good luck logging online you will not be able to do it.Another one people forgot about is the newly created wireless modem and or wireless router. The farther you are from those the slower it gets not to mention some neighbor could also be using your internet connection at THEIR house to download p0rn and what not.

ok this is all fine, but why didn't we have these problems on socom 1? on average dsl is faster than cable, thats why cable users should be host.

I don't think some of you people seriously read the first post in this thread. Its not Zipper, its not Sony, ITS YOU!

"OMG i couldnt believe it every room i went into last night was laggy!!"

Maybe some of you should put 2 and 2 together. If every room is laggy, its probably your connection! I hardly ever notice any lag (besides the half second delay between when some is shot and when they actually die), and I have three computers running on one connection, plus my PS2. I guess I got lucky and got a good connection.

You may notice that both the highly detalied maps and the maps with little or no fog effect are the worst for "lag". Bitter Jungle and Vigilance are prime examples. Vigilance has no "fog" effect, in that you can see from one side of the map to the other, therefore there is more for one's PS2 to load at one time. My theory is that if theres fog, like in Foxhunt for example, your PS2 doesnt have to load the stuff on the other side of the map because you can't see it. In this respect, it is possible for zipper to do something about the lag: Sacrifice some graphic quality for online performance. Or maybe with S3 they found a way to smooth the process over.
