Something similar happened at Great America on Top Gun. Some guy went past the barred walk-ways to grab his hat that flew off, and then the coaster came by above his head and someone's feet smacked him in the head, break his neck and shattered the person's foot.
I like how all they say is "the ride malfunctioned." I'd have to say that's a pretty weird malfunction where someone's lower 10-digits get lopped off. Probably, in a chain or part of the tress frame?
I find it really creepy how the human body doesn't process immediately after something traumatic. It's kind of har dto explain in text but it's weird how you can be calm right after something like this, then you realize what has happened and I imagine it would be a nightmare.

When a body part is detatched from the body, the nerve ending aren't together. Since those nerves repair fast, it takes a batch of seconds before they connect again. Thus, allowing us to not feel or notice anything odd for an amount of time./
They used to have a crocodile pit underneath a coaster by me at Bush Grardens called Montu... I was saddened when I learned that they eventually had moved the crocodiles elsewhere.
