Well, have you tried putting a different game into your PS2? Does it do the same thing as you explained with the Socom 2 disc?

If all your other games work, I would recommend you get a new copy of Socom 2. I know how stores are nowadys with returning electronics, but most of the time if you explain the situation calmly, they will let you exchange it for the same exact product, rather than not taking it back at all.

However, if the problem persists with your other games as well, I'm afraid to say that there may be a problem with your PS2 lens, which is responsible for reading the game disc. Your only options here would be to either purchase a brand new PS2, or to bring it to a repair shop near you (I'm not sure if you can ship it back to Sony for repair).

Definitely try some of your other games before bringing anything back to the store or for repair.

no it only does it with socom 2[ a little with others] but socom is the only one which just doesn't run,
yeah even i considered returning the disc to the shop, but there is just a small problem, i live in quetta[pakistan] and the shp is some 5,000+miles away in california, so you see?

Seeing how the problem occurs a bit with your other games as well, I believe your lens inside your playstation is either dirty, or the lens is on its way out.

It is possible that you only need to clean the lens, and everything will be fine, but I would not recommend this unless you absolutely know how to, seeing how you could damage the lens if you don't know what you are doing.

You can ask around to see if there are any places in your area that are willing or able to clean the lens in your PS2, or you try to find a thorough tuturial online explaining how to clean the lens.

You might be better off first trying to get a replacement disk of SOCOM 2, even though the store is so far away. You may have to wait a couple of weeks, but there is always a chance that it will work.

Your link just goes back to the main page. I believe this is what you were trying to refer him to, so I'll just post it up.

You're now at phase one of fixing your PS2 yourself without having to wait 6-8 weeks for it to be replaced by Sony.

WARNING! VOIDS WARRANTY! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION!

WARNING! TYPICAL RESULTS MAY VARY! POSSIBLE CHANCE THE OPERATION WILL NOT WORK!

First, we want to establish tools needed:

1) A very small Philips Head Screwdriver.
2) A pencil.
3) A few Q-tips
4) A small vacuum cleaner, or a gentle hand with a barely moist paper towel.
5) A bottle of FDA Approved Rubbing Alcohol.

Next, we need to point you to your warranty if you haven't figured out what it is:

The warrenty is the 1 inch by 3 inch black tape that reads,

Quote:
WARRaNTY SEAL
WARRENTY VOID IF THIS SEAL ON THE Playstation 2 CONSOLE IS BROKEN.
Now the fun begins :

Break that blasted seal!
WARNING! VOIDS WARRaNTY! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION!
On the bottom of the PS2, there are 4 rubber 'feet' and 4 plastic square pads. Pull them off and put them to the side.
Take your screwdriver and unscrew all 8 screws.
~Note~ Remember which screw goes where ~Note~
Now, lift the cover and pull towards you over the memory card, controller slot.
~Note~ Take care NOT TO RIP the power ribbon. I ripped it and had to buy a completely new PS2... ~Note~
You now see a miniture version of hell. Take the vacuum/towel and clean out all the dust in the air vent and silver slits.
Next, use the small screwdriver and unscrew the cover for the disc tray. Set it to the side.
Now, take your rubbing alcohol and Q-tips and clean the lens by dipping the tip of the Q-tip into the container of the rubbing alcohol. Do not get it dripping wet.

You have just performed a simple maintenance session of your PS2. Test to see if this possibly was the problem. How to Test:

Replace the cover to the disc tray only and push down gently to keep in in place. You don't have to put the main cover of the PS2 on. Turn on, put game in and try.

If it still doesn't work...:

We move to the technical part of the operation.
Remove the disc tray cover and look near the lens.
You should see a small white pronged disc-wheel.
~Note~What this disc does, is that it raises and lowers the distance between the CD and the lens. You can see for yourself AFTER the next step~Note~
Make a perpendicular mark on the disc.
Special Step A-Now, rotate the disc three clicks clockwise to the right.
Special Step B-Test it (use procedure shown above).
Continue to do Special Step A and Special Step B until it works.

WARNING, IF YOU FOLLOWED MY OPERATION STEP BY STEP AND DID NOT GET SUCCESSFUL RESULTS, PLEASE NOTE THAT I WARNED YOU PRIOR TO THE OPERATION THAT THERE IS A CHANCE IT WILL NOT WORK. I WILL NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE

Now... if you get the message, "Cannot Read Disc", you have a motherboard problem. This can only be replaceable by Sony. Call the number and send it in.

This has been a Cheesy Production. All Rights Reserved. Warnings has been posted. Will not be held accountable for failures. 'Disc Read Error operation' should only be used if the owner does not feel like sending in the said gaming consol into Sony. Use in only dire to extreme cases. Feel free to PM Cheesy for questions or Comments.
