The environmental crisis

Global warming, climate change, call it what you will. It is happening and is effecting us all in a different way. Soon enough, we will have even bigger problems to deal with. Hurricane Katrina and Rita were just small examples of what can happen when the ocean warms.

To human knowledge today, this rise in temperature is caused by greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is produced when a hydrocarbon (such as octane, which is what gives gasoline its power) is burned with unlimited oxygen. The simple solution, when looking at combustibles, is hydrogen. Hydrogen produces nothing but water when burned. But, then there is the problem of producing hydrogen to fulfill the world demand for fuel.

There is also the issue of conservation. In America, this doesn't seem too likely, since every automobile industry in this nation keeps advertising their "more meaty" pickup trucks and their "extended, full-size SUVs." Why do we need these things? Why are most large vehicles on the road occupied by only one person? Why do people drive way more than they need to? Why is our public transportation decades behind other countries?

These are all important questions to ask. But, the most important question to ask is- When are we going to do something about this? The answer (hopefully) is now. There are millions of people around the world pushing for action on global warming.

And look, even Bush is agreeing with them.

Bush urges 15 nations to set global emissions goal - CNN.com

If he holds true to his word, then the world will begin to progress out of the chasm that global warming and greenhouse gases have us trapped in. Hopefully, with a world effort, we can overcome global warming and restore the world to the great state that it once was.

Discuss further. Argue if you are too stubborn to believe in global warming. Please discuss this in an educated manner, though. Think before you type. Contribute and keep it an intelligent discussion.

I agree. Katrina was obviously a catastrophe, Too bad most people are to blind see that over the years, Hurricanes have gotten more deadly due to global warming increasing in such a great number. We're all doomed if this doesn't end.

It's never going to get any better than this. Not like even if we stopped the minimal effect it has on our climate we'd be able to cool the Earth back down or something.

The Earth isn't going to last forever, no matter how hard anyone tries. We pay the price for our indulgence by slowly eating away at our enviroment, and I really don't think there is anything that effective we can do about it.

I wouldn't deny the existence of global warming, but I think there is quite a bit of the scare tactics being used today to get people to shapen up. I think there are too many theoretical and possible outcomes that all say it's going to kill our planet, in other words exaggeration.

I don't really know if believe in global warming itself, but I believe that something along those lines will eventually cripple the earth.

But I'm too stubborn to do anything about it. Screw hybrids... I love my gas-guzzling truck.

We could simply develop a nation that runs primarily on solar power and that would help. Unfortunetely those in charge would have a hard time justifying insane taxes on energy that is free to everyone.

Face it............we are a failed species. In evolutionary time our stay here on earth has been as long as a protozoan penis in the world's largest ocean. And even if we manage to survive another few hundred years that penis may not even noticably grow.

Thank you religion. You have taught us to be peaceful (as long as we worship the same imaginary deity.) Bye bye

Thank you government. You have kept us in check while our checks padded your worth. See ya

Thank you Day After Tomorrow. Your brilliant movie was inspiring. I would love to see Manhattan get doused by 50 story waves. Maybe then, with all the non-english speaking turban headed careless kamakazee taxi driving buttplugs drowned, I can get across the island in less than 2 hours.

LET'S GO GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!

I just hope that a human with a mutation that allows their body to be dependant on CO2 doesn't exist. I'd hate to see our hideously distorted DNA survive and reproduce. If god is a golfer, global warming just may be his mulligan. Stock up on sunscreen and plants. You're gonna need'em.

Honestly, I cared for a while but now the problem is persisting I don't really care anymore.

It will take almost the entire world to change the way we are going and we know that people can't conform to even the simplest things today so getting everyone to ride a horse to work or something is out of the question.

Global warming needs to stop, but I can't see it happening no matter how hard one or two nations try.

I'd vote for him... he seems to be the only person that I have ever "met" that has the same disliking for cab drivers that I have.

Nice to see how Americanized you've become.

As usual, Boba has once again hit the Nail on the Head and left me speechless in his review mirror of wisdom.

I find it funny how in the past week how Bush has imposed Sanctions against Sudan and also calls for 15 Countries to to set a global emmisions goal. These are two topics that a majority of people in this country have been hotly debating for the past 2 years. Coincidence ???? Kinda makes me feel like taking a dump on the front lawn of the White House.
