I'm starting to see some real cheap (but seemingly half decent quality) towers in Wal-Mart. I wouldn't recommend buying one from there, but if you want something cheap and generic, try there.

My local one has eMachines, Acer, Everex, Compaq, and recently stocked up on Dell, and HP. They also have some Toshiba laptops but you don't want that. Most of them are only good for your situation (you are adding RAM) but I wouldn't send someone there normally. (Bought 2 eMachines and a Compaq from there in 2005, only one of them has survived to this day)

My PC is/was an eMachines from Best Buy. For being a cheap brand, eMachines offers a lot and mine was actually a really great computer. Now that I think about it I think it got zapped by lightning or something.

As for Walmart, I would rather buy from Walmart than Best Buy. My laptop is from Walmart (yeah, a Toshiba, which I'm loving btw), and they offer one 2 year service plan for like 80 dollars, as opposed to buying from Best Buy and getting a 2 year service plan for 100, plus all the software packages they talk you into buying to install on the computer.
