Crysis vs MGS4

I don't know where this is from. Someone posted it up GameTrailers and didnt provide a link of where he got it. But this is made to compare the two different art directions in the game. Not necessarily what looks more REALISTIC.

And Crysis being the most realistic looking game in production right now, and it is still in its earily stages, many would use it as a model to compare other games to

My thought is that MGS4 has a better art style and very nice graphics, while Crysis does have the more realistic graphics and would need one hellaofa computer to run, but that usually isnt the most appealing.

And ofcourse quite a few of these pictures arnt the best of quality, but enough to make a comparison. (And each pic has a pretty similiar scene in it)

So, which graphics are you more fond of?

(And I would of put a 56k warning on the title, but, im sure people that still have 56k dont want to be reminded of it xD)

Oh, and for both, they REAL TIME GRAPHICS, no CGI, no Killzone 2 ********.

I say MGS4 just because it looks more like a movie.

I prefer MGS4... but only because I have been a fan of the series since the first NES version, and I think Kojima is a demi-god (as far as game developers go).

I think Crysis looks more realistic due to lighting and some of the MGS4 stuff looking cartoony. Thats exactly what I want in next-gen(current-gen?) games, REALISTIC looking graphics. I love RSV's graphics, but if they weren't quite as cartoony, oh boy would I play that game more.

Its your opinion so I respect that but answer this, how in the HELL is MGS4 Cartoony?

From that post, I get the impression that you are a "I take graphics over gameplay" kinda guy.

I think that.....

Character Models:
MGS4 > Crysis

Realistic looking environments:
Crysis > MGS4

More Artistic:
MGS4 > Crysis (How artistic could it be if they make it look extremely real)

Cartoony:
.........................Looney tunes?

Crysis no doubt has the more realistic graphics, but MGS has more of a war feeling to it. It's more dirty and there's dust flying around everywhere.

In the end I prefer MGS, but that's because I'm a big fan of MGS, I couldn't run Crysis in this lifetime (or the next ), and I know nothing about Crysis.

But I have no doubt they'll both be spectacular.

I'm still left wondering how in the blue hell he could consider R6V to be cartoony...

I realize this is a competition between graphics, but I'd like to point a few things out. This post, before you begin to make any assumptions, is going to be decidedly biased towards Crysis, and you'll see why.

First of all, those aren't the best shots of Crysis I've seen by a long shot. If you want to see something incredibly amazing, I suggest you take a look at the latest video released: the Game Developers Conference 2007 Trailer (GDC 07), which can be found here.

That page has all sorts of other gameplay videos as well which look to be quite impressive.

On to the actual comparison. I'm not as interested in the graphics (they're absolutely stunning for both games) as much as the features of the engine (CryENGINE™ 2). If you look at the GDC video, you'll see some of the crazy features offered by it: very nice real time lighting (including atmospheric), motion blur, depth of field, destructable environment, etc. It is honestly an extremely impressive feat of engineering. And the lighting, depth of field, and motion blur are all aspects of the graphics of the game. Screenshots don't do this thing justice in my opinion.

That being said, I don't know much about MGS4, and can't really say anything bad about it. The trailers are impressive, to say the least. It's definitely going to be an extremely good game, as they all were.

Overall, in my opinion I can't rate the two against one another. Just looking at a handful of screenshots is injustice to both in my opinion, and I can't say that even after watching videos on both that a conclusive "winner" can be chosen. I'd suggest playing both games and personally choosing which you like more, because they'll both definitely give you a run for your money!

This is a pretty interesting topic. I LoLed because man, these days people will
make an ANYTHING VS thread I swear.

That aside, art directions go in certain directions for a reason, and usually because
that game director(s) have a vision of what it will look like already. MGS always
had that 'soft' look in the appearance of everything but what always....ALWAYS
astonished me is that Kojima and team just slay me with the amount of detail
they will put into a game. Now, I'm actually just waiting to be amazed again at
what details you think wouldn't be in MGS4 but then when you start playing it,
low 'n behold there they are.

If you think back you'll notice that Kojima n' team also have that 'soft edged' look
in the Z.O.E. series. Must just be a preference...

Crysis is just......wow. I think the more realistic a game looks, it's because the
devs making the game are REALLY striving for the experience you'll have to be
a totally immersive one. I can definitely see this game doing just that. I know
there are many ways to 'immerse' someone...but this was just to illustrate here
between these 2 games under graphical prowess.

Yah I know, for both Crysis and MGS4 there are some pretty bad quality pictures. Whoever made it didnt make it as well as they could of, but we are focusing more on art direction, and what someone preffers. But yes, other pics and trailers of each game look a LOT better.
