CIO Today
I first saw this yesterday but I couldn't find the article today, I posted one off a random site I found.
They say that ,what will basically the second internet, could have a transfer rate of anyhwere around 100GB/S!!!
Just to put it into perspective, I have an 11MB/S wireless connection running on a slow *** computer. I can download most music in easily less than 5 minutes (sometimes less than 2) and full DVD quality movies in an hour or two.
Although a 100GB/s network is in development, actual tests maxed out at around 9.08GB/s which is still many many times faster than the average internet connection.
This amazed me more than anything though, they are saying that 9.08GB/s is still slow!
They are saying that the current "sluggish" internet2 system would take about half a minute to transfer a full HD movie, but the new 100GB/s system in production wouldn't even take that long!
Personal observation:
- Average movie download is about 700mb from Limewire. They are obviously bigger on most other sites and also HD movies take up a lot more space. Round it up to 1GB for argument's sake.
- 1 HD movie download in half a minute on the "sluggish" Internet 2 system.
- This means 2 movies per minute, hense 2GB per minute.
- You could fill an 80GB HD in 40 Minutes, and a 120GB HD in only an hour.
NOTE: Not all movies are that small and my calculations are based on downloading 1 movie at a time.
I will be very stereotypical here and say that in the time it takes to make a cup of tea, you could have already downloaded at least 10 movies! Thats a lot if you ask me.
All they need to do now is create a DVD burner and software that can write them in a few minutes, and disks that wont melt/shatter while spinning at a bajillion RPM.
