Happy next Holiday...

With the recent passing of Easter I thought I'd bring up some holiday discussion Did you know that they almost have a holiday for everything that goes on now I can't remember what date, but there is a National Video Game Playing day out there in the world and to think a holiday for video gamers (Hells yes). That's not all though (Due to some WikiPedia research just now) some holidays get recognized more than others...

Unlike countries where holidays are required by law, there are no national holidays in the United States. However, the United States Congress has created federal holidays for employees of the United States Government and the District of Columbia. Most states have declared state holidays to coincide with these federal holidays. In spite of numerous attempts, the United States has never established true national holidays. (However, most labor contracts provide for extra pay or other special consideration for those required to work on officially-recognized holidays.)
On June 28, 1968, The United States Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved four holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The holidays included Washington's Birthday (which essentially evolved into Presidents' Day), Memorial Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day. The law took effect in 1971 at the federal level. After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply at the state level, all fifty states adopted the measure within a few years. Veteran's Day was eventually changed back to its traditional date.
For the holidays not observed on a specified Monday, when the date falls on a Saturday, it is observed the previous Friday, and when the date falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following Monday. The list below is a comprehensive list; usually employees only receive a small portion of these holidays as paid vacation days; typically, they receive only 8 of these holidays off as paid vacation. Government workers (especially federal workers) typically have more days off.
So to quote Happy Income Tax day (Get your taxes done) and whatever holiday follows.

(Please feel free to discuss)

I notice that Christmas Day is listed as the 26th as far as the government is concerned. Is that a point of politics being slow on the up take?

Video Games Day celebrates popular video games that stormed onto the market, and changed the way your kids play games. From Atari to Nintendo to Xbox, video games provide all too many hours of playing time on your television set.

In grandma and grandpa's day, they had stick horses for toys and playtime. Todays kids (big kids and little kids) have an enormous array of video games to play. Before you get tired of one game, another one hits the market.

Our extensive research into this special day discovered two separately distinct dates. Also, both dates for this special day refer to it as Video Games Day and National Video Games Day. Based upon our research results, we give the edge to September 12th as National Video Games Day. Lucky gamer that you are, you get to celebrate two video games days.

Celebrate National Video Games Day by playing video games. If you are off from school (or if you are a big kid off from work), make this a marathon day for video games. Better still, invite a few friends and hold a competition. Just make certain that you have enough controllers.
The Origin of Video Games Day:
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. We found no information to help us to sort out why there are two different dates for this event.

We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a "National" day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.

If you have any information about this holiday, please email us.

Do you know the origins of NVGD (I know I got it wrong in my first post)?
As for Christmas I dunno. I tend to steer clear from as many politics as I can (Just don't care for em').

This list seems to be a hodge podge of different lists. Speaking only to 12/26, it's a holiday reserved for federal employees in addition to 12/25. So they get off Christmas Day +1.

They typically get an early dismissal for Christmas Eve. Both of my parents work for the mans.

It's the celebration of the day the United States adopted the flag.

We're not the only country that has a flag day. Here is quite a list of countries:

<sigh>

Seeing a picture like that makes me wish I could've had the chance to toss a grenade (or two) into that crowd of people.

(And Christmas is celebrated because of my birthday.)
