A PS3 Firmware Update (1.5)

From: Sony's firmware 1.5 update for PS3 includes contactless payments - Engadget
Quote:
Sony's latest PS3 firmware update (1.5 already? Oh how the time flies!) really has its heart in the right place. None of this magnanimous 720p Blu-ray playback nonsense, or any other help for the True HD impaired. No, this time around Sony is concentrating on what really matters: raking in the cash. See, the update lets you hook up a fancy little PaSoRi reader, which can pull contactless payments from your Edy money card or Felica phone to fill up your Network Wallet with relevant monies. It's all Japan-only, of course, but perhaps one day we can be cool like our island friends. Other minor enhancements include the addition of WEP128 and WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES) for wireless security, and a few other smaller fixes. The firmware should be headed to Japanese PS3s tomorrow.
Bah! And to think I spent all that waiting time thinking it was something worthwhile!

It's like the Firmware for the PSP, which I have found pointless in the last few ones. This update just wants PS3 owners to pay more money for something we already spent $700 on. I love my PS3, but I don't think Sony is going to make it worth the money.

But Konami, Namco, Insomniac, Zipper, and Criterion will.

This is why they call it the SONY Playstation instead of the Fun and Enjoyable Playstation.

One good thing that came with the update is that they fixed the graphics "downgrade" when you played a PS2/PS1 game.

I haven't downloaded it yet, then again I haven't played in forever.

Boyz, that did make total sense. As did what Radio stated.

Now I'm not complaining of the fact that they made this update to get more money. I don't doubt that they plan on making more money with it (why wouldn't they?), but I guess this is just a convenient way to buy things on the system without having to put in all your credit card and contact info. (It works similarly to the smartchips that American Express used in their Blue cards not too long ago...) I still have that smartchip reader (USB), I wonder if it'd work still...

My point of complaining was the fact that they had an update for basically something that hasn't even been invented in the USA yet and just basically benefits the Japan market. I just found that to be annoying. But hey, at least they aren't charging for the use of their online service, so I still <3 PS3. There's still more to come out of the system just yet so just hold your ponies, everyone.

Just don't make me download useless crap, Sony!

It's not useless at all...the shoddy quality of PS1/2 game graphics on the PS3 have been fixed (FINALLY!!!) and the Playstation store/general web browser seem a bit more responsive overall. Very very nice and useful unless you don't use the browser or own any PS1/2 games at all in which case you probably shouldn't even own a PS3. (...I mean really - with the limited selection of PS3 games how can you NOT have at least a few PS1/2 games to play on your PS3? not to mention the web browser almost = free cable when used with alloftv.net, YouTube - Broadcast Yourself., and other sites with flash video...)

I guess you have a good point there. I haven't even played any PS2 games to notice that the graphics were worse. So I guess I'm not worthy and I'll have to get rid of my PS3 now. And today I noticed the browser works a lot more smoothly.

That's a great idea with the watching shows through the browser... I gotta try that. Now I can watch Extras without HBO!

Thanks for helping me see the light.

My cursor when I browse the web seems to move faster (after the update). I don't like it! Does anyone know how to change the cursor speed?
