Popular Hip Hop?!

Rap today for some reason is blowing totally. I think thats why Jay-Z came back, its so damn easy. You can make shtuff up, and it sells soo much. "This is why I'm Hot", "I make it Rain", "We Fly High", "Chains Hang Low", all make little to no sense/say nothing.

This is from "I Make It Rain".

Gotta get that baby love, gotta get my paper up
Gotta suspect me, exactly test this crack and want a ring on us
And you know what it is, yo, it's them powder kids
And we know how 2 bizz, so we don't give a ****.
Now if anyone speaks this language... will you please decipher it for me?

Its reasons like this hit hop gets such a bad rap (no pun intended) from people these days. And even Otter called it (c)rap... cuz it is. But good rap is better.

Now Compare that to something from Nas...
(from a song where the whole thing is a story that is comprehensible... In which he finds his wife cheating on him, calls up a friend, kills the guy and then his wife by mistake, paints the story with words beautifully...)

Better as heeeell? I think so. Thats my example of how modern hip hop <

Jay-Z is the only one still on top of his game. He's a business.

Refer to the orange highlighted parts.

Owwwww mami's body is banging, man, she got it, man, she does it all
She gets it popping with no hands, I'll make it pour*I think he's talking about a girl coming down a strip pole with no hands*
I'll make it rain on 'em I'll lay a game to 'em
I'm gassing misses to tattoo my name on 'em*Not the right lyric, the correct lyric is "I'm askin misses to tattoo my name on em"*
Gotta get that baby love, gotta get my paper up
Gotta suspect me, exactly test this crack and want a ring on us *Fat Joes nickname is "Crack", but I'm not sure about the other part**
And you know what it is, yo, it's them powder kids
And we know how 2 bizz, so we don't give a ****.*Basicaly means that they know how to handle their business*

But, to some people it makes sense, to others, not so much. You just have to know what they are talking about. But not ALL hip hop and rap these days suck.

Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Game and the list goes on and on and on and on of other great rappers.

And agent, 50 Cent is also a business, he has shoes, clothes, a vitimin(sp?) water, a record lable and is in works with Apple for a line of computers for people with low in-come, and a few other things. He's made more money last year than Jay-Z

I have brought this up before but what does shoes, vitamin water and clothing lines have to do with music?

I agree that 06 has really been a terrible year for rap but lets hope 07 has some more rap that is understandable. Like what the hell was with Chicken Noodle Soup? I mean seriously any one can rap about a soup but please dont make a record out of it.

Nothing really, but it promotes the music.

And Bman, the "Chicken Noodle Soup" song, is a dance craze from NY.

Yeah but if you are focusing so much on the business and how much money you are making then that means less time working on music. With all these musicians (not just rappers) working on side projects, doing acting roles and other not musical projects ends up lowering the quality of their music. This is just my opinion though.

I despise current rap, rap isn't my cup of tea, so yes, my opinion can be a little biased, but modern rap blows.

Why? As you said, the lyrics, not only half of them are gibberish, 80% of modern mainstream rap lyrics have to do with the following.

Money
Women
Sex
Drugs
Avoiding the law..
"Bling"
How "Pimp" they are.

Rappers like 50 Cent and Paul Wall should die in a fire IMO.

Old-school rappers deserve respect, like LL Cool Jay, Public enemy, etc. There songs, or at least most of them, weren't about the stupid sh*t rappers sing about now.
