Digital Underground. If you've seen the film "Nothing But Trouble" you know who I mean.

Why? As you said, the lyrics, not only half of them are gibberish, 80% of modern mainstream rap lyrics have to do with the following.
Money
Women
Sex
Drugs
Avoiding the law..
"Bling"
How "Pimp" they are.
Rappers like 50 Cent and Paul Wall should die in a fire IMO.
Old-school rappers deserve respect, like LL Cool Jay, Public enemy, etc. There songs, or at least most of them, weren't about the stupid sh*t rappers sing about now.

My question is;
Why don't people bash the "rock" age when that's what it was all about? Did you all forget so soon that once upon a time, rock was about woman, drugs, money, sex?

I don't think Night knows to much about music before the 90's (thats what I seem from most of his posts atleast). To be honest yeah rock and rap are both guilty of having those type of lyrics. Raps more mainstream today contains alot of those types of lyrics and rock from the 80's had alot of it too (Glam Metal in particular).

Ok, Compare that to the 11ish albums Jay-Z's made over the last 9 or so years.

BAM!. True. However, they still aren't as 'popular' as the sh!tty ones. Kids at my school can't get enough of the worst music i have ever heard. Aside from country and ICP (my opinion.)

Cuz they don't have the hook-up. Everyone popular nowadays is someone else popular's son, father, uncle, neice, nephew, brother, friend, whatever the fu<k.

Pretty much what I am saying. I also agree with the bottom there. Wu-Tang, and everyone in it, all have single albums... Nas... all the people that have been around since early nineties deserve respect, as well.
Couldnt really agree more about the dying in a fire thing.
and, whats this... breaking news to me:

In the backstage/personal life it was, but a good amount of their songs weren't about those things, there was loads of variety in classic rock, not to mention they didn't sing about how pimp they were or breaking the law too much either.
Besides, this was classic rock, this was 30-40 years ago, wouldn't it be pointless to complain about something "Classic"? None the less, classic rock was still awsome, and old school rap was good.
And classic rock didn't give NEARLY as bad of a message as current rap does, most rap videos are loads of people dancing in a club or something..or women in skimpy-*** clothes dancing with the rapper, nor does rap have much of a variety anymore, its all about the same stuff.(Mainstream mostly)
Mainstream classic rock bands, at least, had a good variety. And a certain uniqueness, alot of modern day rappers sound pretty similar if you ask me.
ALSO, as Bog said, I honestly don't know much about clasic rock, so I'm not one to ask about it, so my opinion could be very well wrong.

No, it wasn't 30-40 years ago, it was in the 80's
And the only way modern rap sounds similar is if the people are from the same area. Westcoast rap sounds different than eastcoast, and they both sound different than down south.

80's= New Wave mostly. ahah.
Another thing is failure of Exposure due to Political views.
You'll never hear Dead Prez, Immortal Technique, the political songs by Mos Def, Mr.Lif, Rass Kass, or Jedi Mind Tricks on the radio.
Becuase they reveal ideas about war and conspiracies.
See: "Earthcrusher" by Mr. Lif, Bin Ladin by Immortal Technique and Mos Def.
These GOOD songs cant compare with crappy popular stuff, because they dont want us hearing political stuff, they want us to hear things that will make us dumber through repitition and subliminal retardation.

80's = Glam/Hair Metal where the topics of Girls, Drugs, Sex and Partying were very common themes in songs.

That isn't true.
See Mosh and White America by Eminem.
And quite a few other songs.

Yes. But i'm not bitching about the topics of the song, its just HOW they say them. They could use understandable words, and create thoughtful processed stories like Nas. he has many songs that are like poetry. I have heard that Big L's work is actually studied in High Schools for its poetic nature. If they could all do this, and make inteligent rap, the whole "uneducated" view on rappers would stop. They act dumb to make money, or they are dumb, and make money.

Which is true.
If the good songs that made sense were more popular, things would be different. Mainstream ideas and such would be more productive, it would stop people from spending so much money "pimping" they're everything. My brother LOVES this crappy music, so I hear all of it. Some of its really catchy, and grows on you, which is what they want. Its so evil.
also...

Yes, thats Eminem. He has achieved to the point where he is popular, so he can do that. He had to at first not express all his opinions in order for him to get there. The good artist who wont give up wont be able to achieve such great status. people like immortal have been asked to stop there views, and to sell out, to be signed into a huge record deal, but wont.
